Cool Looking at an XKR

I will be looking at a 2001 XKR this week, but I'd like your guys' opinion as well before I go see it. The car is in limp mode, the guy does not know why and does not have a scanner. Previous repair documents show the car has had intermittent misfires and has had all coil packs replaced twice in the past 5 years. Both repairs made with "owner supplied parts" (previous owner). Comes with a box of Delphi ignition coils same as these ones here Ebay Delphi Coils. I do not know anything about these coils, they might be complete rubbish. In 2022 it had got a new alternator and belt, spark plugs, fuel filter, and oxygen sensor. The most recent repair back in 2023 said the car was misfiring on cylinder 3 and 8, and that there was no spark to cylinder 3. Sounds odd, kind of like a crappy ignition coil. The guy who has it now bought it in the current state, got scared of possible "electrical issues", and is selling it. Not a jaguar person. 110k on the mileage and runs without overheating and can be driven around the neighborhood. He says it has "severe hesitation". Possibly needs fuel pumps/ injectors?

I don't really know what to think until I go and look at it. Someone prior had really loved the thing and had the exhaust upgraded, pulley upgraded, and it also has the mina intake. I am pretty excited but just doing the cosmetic work on this car is going to be costly. Paint, interior stuff, ect. And it has a salvage title to boot. Oh well, the price is good and I would like to save it from the scrapper. I'd be happy if I got it running good and made it my new daily so I don't have to put more miles on my beloved (also 2001 XKR - I might also add they match except this one is a convertible!)

Agreed. A very good XKR with that mileage is $10-15k. Whatever it would be worth after you put in time and $ to get it running divide by 2 because of the salvage title. Would pay no more than what could part out for if turns out to be unfixable at a reasonable cost.

Take a code reader with you. Sounds like it’s not very drivable in its current state so that makes it difficult to evaluate. Take your time. My guess is it will not sell quickly. Like others, I would be leery of a salvaged title. Indicates insurance was unwilling to cover damage or theft at some point.

I would take a fuel pressure gauge with me.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned timing chain tensioners. If the car still has the originals and they are falling apart, you may well end up with a poorly running engine before it finally detonates.

Well, ended up passing on the car. It would have been $1k- so even as a parts car, fine. But, there wasn't a lot to salvage. The whole car had been very badly resprayed, and had definitely gotten in a front collision. XK8 bumper and fender (green badged) and a CATS suspension wire going to non-cats suspension. The wiring had been totally messed with, wires going to makeshift fuses in the car. The wheels sort of messed up too, and the interior was B A D. And the engine- imagine three baseballs tossed in a 5 gallon bucket, and shake vigorously. Welp, it would have been nice but dodged a bullet with that one.

Seeing a dilapidated, neglected, or beat-up wreck can be a let-down if your hopes have been somewhere else. I don't know how many of us on this forum are salvage yard, part-it-out types, but as they say, Part Is Parts.
