Default Loose Shroud Under Engine - RESOLVED

Heard a scraping noise from under the engine bay while out driving earlier this week. Assumed it was a plastic bag or twig and left it to the week-end to see if it was still there.

When I had a look under the engine, I found this dangling from the underside of the engine:

The u-shaped end was wrapped around the hexagonal hole in the picture below, while the flat end was scraping along the floor:

Any ideas what the plastic shroud is? Does it belong on the XKR? If so, is it important and does it need to be re-fitted? Or can I just ignore it? What does the plastic hexagonal duct do?

Best wishes, Colin

The 2 cutouts arrowed in yellow clip onto the Undertray and the Duct is secured with a single hexagon bolt through the hole arrowed in red.

Exactly what does the generator air duct do--to what is it providing air?

My wife's XK8 was missing this cheap plastic duct when we purchased the car not quite two years ago. I ordered one ($34 with a discount - in reality it should sell for no more than five bucks) and installed it. My personal belief is that our alternators will do just fine without it....
