Question Is this a LRA1536BA vvt valve / solenoid?

Hi Everyone,

I have oil coming out the edges of this on my engine. I am unsure of this part and proper replacement.

Thanks

**Note: See post #12 for clarification**

Yes that is the VVT Solenoid but it is NOT LRA1536BA. That part number is for the VVT actuator for an AJ26 engine which is '97-'98. Your solenoid is part number AJ810570. The seal in question is part number AJ82856. Those don't normally cause too much trouble unless there is above normal crankcase pressure. I would take the little hose connector loose that is just to the right and above the solenoid in your picture and run small 1/8 inch drill bit into the cam cover. That will rod out a plugged part-load breather.

Cheers,

I agree, it is worth cleaning the part load breather, but I had a VVT seal go bad on my 4.2 S-type. You can just remove the VVT connector, pry the seal up gently with a screwdriver from the top and replace it....easy. The VVT solenoid and it's seal are totally separate parts.

Gameblaster: PM me with your address and I will send you (for free) 2 seals that I had left over when I did the Secondary Tensioner Job on my XKR (The XKR dosen't use the VVT).

Also, I think that the part Load Breather requires a 3/32" Drill to clean it.

What the he** is wrong with me? Correct, 2.5mm or 3/32" to clean out the part load breather. No idea why I gave the other figure; must be the beer!
My apologies, and thanks for the correction.

Cheers,

Wrap some tape around the drill bit end to keep it from dropping into the engine.

There's a baffle behind the hole so the bit can only go in so far unles the bit is real short.

Default LRA1536BA is the old number for AJ27

the superseded number, same part, is AJ810570 for AJ27. Constant (300 MgHz)variable frequency valve solenoid , unlike the on / off solenoid of the AJ26. I was hopeful the manufacturer would have a program flash to accept a wider response tolerance for these to avoid so many DTC issues.
I hope XJRguy is able to verify these numbers as his earlier post threw me a curve to try and figure out what was up. But all the solenoids laying on my desk currently were removed from a "1999' XK8 AJ27" and are imprinted with the old number above...

I see your confusion. Seems the parts catalog jumbles illustrations on some VIN ranges. My apologies.

AJ26 VVT Solenoid
[on/off, looks like a hockey puck, plugs into engine timing cover]
Part #LCA1535AD, uses KSC145624 "O" ring seal

AJ27 VVT Solenoid -- like Gameblaster's picture
[fully variable, pokes through Cam Covers]
Part #AJ810570, uses AJ82856 seal
prior part numbers -- C2S4946, AJ84144, AJ82701
**LRA1536BA was apparently used in the S-Type 4.0L and SOME '00-'01 XK8's
but it became the C2S4946, and then AJ810570

Cheers,
