Default Mister Matic, Swansea. £120 ph?

My XKR has been SORN hence had her trailered down to Mister Matic in Swansea.

Needs corrosion work though was surprised when they quoted £4500 just for this. Enquired as to the hourly rate and was told £100 ph for mechanics and £120 ph for the welding, though their welder has just had surgery hence an apprentice, I assume, would do the work? Still that's about 40 hours work.

Does anyone else have experience of such work, the more extensive the corrosion the better, and how much it cost them in £ and hours terms? Seems like more than double the hours I expected and easily double the hourly rate charged, that I've previously experienced, in South Wales too.

Hello Chaffers!

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.

If you will please let us know the model year of your XKR, I will move your post to the appropriate forum.

Cheers,

Don

Chaffers,

I have moved your thread to the forum for the X100, which is the Jaguar factory project code for your 1999 XKR Coupe. Here you will find knowledgeable owners of similar cars.

It is helpful to others if you will visit your User Control Panel and Edit your Signature to include the year, model and engine details of your Jaguar so they show up in all of your posts. Not all XKRs are the same, so providing this information will help others provide you with the most accurate replies.

Also, please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST and post a required introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jaguar and give you a proper welcome.

Cheers,

Don

Any pictures? Hard to appraise without knowing what needs doing. Lot of money.

Pictures yes . Sounds like you need sills and floor repairs. Also sounds like you are the kind of owner who never gets out and under the car. Corrosion of this magnitude does not occur overnight and a few hours with a wire brush and some waxoil 3 or 4 years ago would have saved it ... £4500 is more than its worth.

Mistermatic are Jaguar specialists, so if you want something like your timing chains replaced or ECU swapped they are the people to go to. If you want some welding done, why not take it to someone local to you in Ammanford who might be cheaper?

Anyway, talking of timing chains, have they been done? If not perhaps you would be better off keeping that car as a spares car and buying one that doesn't need major work doing to it.

Do you have a written estimate detailing the work recommended?
