Question moving gauges

Hello everyone,

Our XK8 has the 3 gauge set up in the center stack and I am toying with the idea installing a double din head unit there and moving the gauges down to were the single din unit is now. I had a quick look behind the gauges yesterday but couldn't see much. So just wondering has anybody done this and any words of wisdom on doing it without messing up any electronics?

Thanks
Neil

You will need to cut off the 3-gauge harness connector, leaving a 1 inch or so pigtail on each of the 13 wires. You can then splice in extension wires. If done carefully (with battery disconnected) it would not cause any problems.

Mechanically this will be a bigger challenge. I believe there is HVAC ductwork behind there.

A better/easier solution that others have done successfully is to relocate the row of console buttons in the glovebox and mount the double-din in exisitng the radio location.

Even when installing the DD in the original spot there will be a little heating and mooshing (technical term) of the ductwork in order to install. The upper spot is pretty shallow.

This was my original install. I've since reverted to the original switchpack in the glovebox. However, I do have parts and a plan for returning the switches to the surround, just a better looking way than shown here:

I also changed the change tray to a center speaker grill as this unit has DD5.1 and DTS.
