The bonnet will open near VERTICAL if you release the lift supports and use an alternate prop rod.I have some lift support rods cut and welded into a specific length (longer) and use them to hold it open.(you only need one)

Put it on whatever side you are not working on and they won't get in the way.

Makes it easier to get to the front of the engine.

Thanks for that - I did read about the release on the support rods that allow the bonnet to go near vertical and create more space for work. I'll see about rods like yours when I get to the primary tensioner replacement.

I did hit my head on the bonnet locks many more than one time. Cursing all the time.

Best!

I picked up a telescopic hood prop a few years ago, one of the most useful tools I own - and I own a lot !

I have a few like the ones Hell-Cat shows. Mine are made by Lisle and are readily available online. Prices vary, so shop around.

Cheers,

Don

Putting the hood / bonnet into the service position is darn easy , even for one person. A bolt slipped thru the hinge holes locks it upright and no danger of it falling .

Cost ? : one used bolt & nut per side. It’s that’s not zero then you need to start saving those useless 3/8” diameter bolts you’re been throwing away.

Note: have a very good grip on the hood / bonnet when you release that first hood strut. The remaining strut isn’t strong enough to hold the damn thing up by itself. A helper is sweet, but if you’re out in the garage by yourself, like I am, take a tight grip on the hood when the first strut is removed, then move around the front of the car without letting go of the hood, like your life depended on it, and then pop off the second strut clip. That allows you to raise the hood completely to the blessed service position. Slip your bolt thru the hinge holes and you’re done. No extra parts needed.

I guess you could let the hood down slowly after the first strut is removed, then go around to the opposite side, open the hood back up and remove the second strut. That takes the thrill out of it though.

I don't understand what the alternate prop rod is used for? Surely you only need a couple of M8 bolts? I regularly use the 2 x M8 on my X100 and X150.

Hello,
I always use a broom with an adjustable handle.

Good luck, Willi

Does your Jag not have the two bolt vertical position hinges?

Is too much effort and works absolutely reliably. I also need a tool to keep the garage clean

Interesting. I would say that most of the effort surrounds the removal of the two standard struts and you have to do that either way. As for reliability ..... an adjustable broom vs two 8mm steel bolts ..... hmmmmmm. 😉

I've always used the two bolt method placed it the two holes provided. It might not be a good idea in strong wind outside.

Broomstick on the side I’m not working on and or the “two bolts in the hinge holes” method. Both work. If wind is a concern then use the bolts in the hinge holes method.

Cheers!

I was always a little leery about using the two holes with bolts to hold the bonnet open.
Seems like damage could result if a strong force is used on the hinge.(someone pushing/pulling on it)

The leverage is greater at the bolt holes.

maybe in a commercial setting that might be something to be considered.

But in my residential garage, I’m the only one near the car. Thus far I’ve managed to avoid falling on the bonnet / hood whilst it’s in the service position.
