Default Nav Blank, 2004 XK8

First post. I have read tons of posts on Nav issues, but have not found a solution for my problem. I have a 2004 XK8 with Nav. I have had it about 6 months and love it by the way. When I purchased it the Nav worked great. After a few months the Nav stopped working, only the clock showed up on the screen. I read a ton of stuff on this site about similar issues. So I finally decided to take the Jag off the road for a bit and get this fixed. I took the head unit (display) out and checked connections. Everything seemed fine. I went to the trunk and ejected the disc and re-installed it. No difference. I disconnected the head unit just to double check connections. When I plugged it back in I hand no clock anymore. Now I'm loosing ground. Now the screen is black. I have pushed and poked buttons, checked fuses, disconnected the battery etc etc, to no avail. Do I need a new head unit? What should I do? Dealer? I have seen stuff about a software DVD. Don't have one or know where to look. Is that the problem. How do I tell if the head unit or the unit in the trunk are the issue? What is the logical route to take to troubleshoot this?
Cheers
