Default Need Advice Please

Hello Good Jag Folk
As the title implies I am in need of help. I recently bought an 03 Jaguar xkr that would not start. Gentleman in his 80's had enough of driving so sold it when it simply wouldn't start one day. When the ignition was turned the dash would light up and make bing bong noises but no crank. There is also no fuel pump action behind and no starter relay action from the front.
Being a novice, my first port of call was the starter motor after checking the new battery was fully charged, which it is. I took the starter motor to get refurbished and had the chap even test it in front of my eyes because it is a nightmare to remove. Anyhow, the starter motor refurb guy said the wiring in the solinoid was fried so he replaced it. I put it back on the car yesterday and still no crank, swapped the starter relay for a good one from my other xk8, still no start. Checked battery and it is fully charged.
Also tried the inertia switch as the previous keeper let the old battery die before putting in a new one which it has now...made no difference.
So now I'm getting to the point of looking at either or both of the immobilizer or key transponder. Any thoughts or input on these two steps would be helpful as it gets a bit out of my depth here. I plan to get a mobile mechanic friend come and have a look but he'll be weeks andwanted to ask you good folk first as I may still be able to pull this out of the bag.

Kind Regards and thanks in advance
Ste.

Good move checking on the battery.

Next, try searching for "no crank" in the subject line in this forum using the advanced search option in the upper right corner of your screen or LMGTFY: https://www.google.com/search?q=%22n...8-xkr-x100-17/

If the dash lights, etc., come on when you turn the key to "ON" but when you turn it to '"START" and absolutely nothing happens, not a click from the starter, or anything, odds are it's the neutral safety interlock. Although I haven't had the issue, knock wood, many others have. Try moving the shifter to N and starting the car. Does that work? If so, the car isn't sensing that it's in P.

Same problem on my 1995 X-300, it was the safety neutral switch in the transmission that was bad,

Hi Stephen,
Please don't fire the parts cannon again until you have done some more investigation. Are you aware of any work done to address the no-crank prior to your purchase?

First check is to get the codes read:- let's see if the car can give us any more information.

Sanchius has provided you with some pointers above; in addition:

Do you have another key to try with?

The 4.2L security is more complex than that on our earlier cars (progress). You won't necessarily hear the fuel pump firing as it only runs for a couple of seconds after ignition on until the engine fires up.

If you have the torque app or similar you can check if there's fuel pressure (available over OBD on the 4.2) which could help diagnosis.

You can check the starter in situ by bridging pins 3 and 5 on the starter relay. If the engine then cranks you know the problem is further upstream.

Please report back anything you find.

I have a mechanic friend coming to have a look on Wednesday morning with the proper diagnostic equipment, will get codes from him and take it from there. I have tried both keys, no result and the starter motor wasn't spinning when it was removed and jumped with a battery. It is now good after repair and pops out and spins. I will tell my mechanic about the 3-5 pin relay trick to rule that out. As always thank you for your invaluable help.
Regarding any work done by the previous owner, it was very little, he was 80 years old and put a new battery in it and had an AA man come out who told him the starter motor was shot. He was not mechanically inclined and had a garage do anything that was needed previously but had now had enough of driving.

One thing I should have thought of earlier...

If that's the case, then it might have taken out the attendant fuse. Check F3 (25A) in the engine management fusebox.

Follow up.
Today saw my mobile mechanic come out, managed to turn the engine by bridging 3 and 5 on the relay. Fuses all good, abttery fully charged. Next step was to bring out a mobile lock smith to program keys to transponder and this is where we came unstuck but we now believe we have a faulty KTM ( Key Transponder Module ) as communication was nil. Now the fun begins because finding the KTM was impossible this evening as it turns out to be hidden behind the drivers side fuse box ? somewhere underneath the dash. If anybody has experience as to how to access the KTM to replace it, I would be greatful for your advice and help.

OK so the replacement starter appears good.

Have you pulled any codes?

No codes pulled, completely forgot as it was a really screwed up day. Mechanic showed up then left to come back in the afternoon but showed up 2 hours late with locksmith in tow plus an audience of folks all wanting to hear this car run for the first time asking the locksmith and mechanic questions, really annoyed the whole way through. All very confusing.

Hehe. You can generally rely on having an audience when things go pear-shaped

I'd hold fire on excavating the KTM until you've checked for DTCs. If it is security-related, I'd expect to see code(s) to that effect - P1260?

OK, problem is now solved. Bought a 2nd hand ecu kit, reasonable cheap considering, and she now turns over. Suspect it was the Key Transponder Module after all as the other one I bought looked dodgy. Sadly fuel pumps don't prime but kind of expected that after sitting for 2 years so on to the next task, fuel pumps. I've done it once already on my xk8 so I know what I'm getting into. Thank you to everybody for all your help and support.
