Need answers to 2 trans code questions...
After having searched the forum, I just want to make sure I understand this correctly before proceeding.
My car is throwing a code for improper Transmission Range (believe it's p0706 if I remember correctly; car is doing the "Gearbox Fault" thing about once a week). There are no shifting/running problems.
Today, I noticed that when the fault tripped, I lost illumination of my J-gate selector. Meaning, no lighted "P", "R", etc. So the questions:
1) This is most likely a rotary switch fault, correct?
2) Will the transmission have to be dropped to access the switch?
Thanks,
Jess

P0706 Rotary switch and/or D–4 switch malfunction.
Possible Causes:
Selector cable adjustment / installation incorrect.
D – 4 switch dislocated.
D – 4 switch to TCM circuit open circuit or short circuit to ground.
D – 4 switch failure.
Rotary switch to TCM circuit open circuit or short circuit to ground.
Rotary switch failure.
The rotary switch is bolted to the right side of the gearbox.

Just had one changed on my car, it was done in a garage while they were checking other matters. I took one off a spare box, was held on by two small bolts on a bracket and one bolt which activates the mechanism. If you have the car on a ramp or axle stands it should be doable, and only take at most 10-15 minutes to change.
