Hi, trying to solve my problem, need help. 1998 XKR. Starts normally but sometimes would not crank, when I jerk the gearlever it starts, sometimes need to press it a bit hard forward an to the right to start. Sometimes starts in N position, not always. Have a red arrow at what I think is the Neutral safety switch, is it?
Tryed to adjust the gear-cable, up with the gearlever,, not sure I did it right, made the wire going about 2 mm forward.
Living to far away from a Jaguar service, tried to get help by phone, no success.
When I move the gearlever, every light indicator lights up properly. Pulling it from P to the left, a signal sounds, indicate the neutral safety switch works?
Tok away all the trims, greased with spray, become better for some time, then back to the problem again. Looking at the wiring at jagrepair, it looks like the switch grounding the cable, would it be possible to jump-connect it to be safe? Is it more than one switch? Where are they located?
Check the colours closely. It looks as if the switch in the photo has a wire with black in it and one with white. I think the wiring diagram shows Black/Pink and Red/Blue but you need to check the colour key. I think the Neutral Switch might be build into the selector module on the gearbox.
It does sound like something is slightly out of adjustment on the gearchange mechanism.
Thanks for answering There is no fault codes, have called all thinkable Jaguar service places nearby, no success yet. Nearest answer was that the switch was located underneath the J-gate selector, also checked inside of that, and there was just a small cirutboard for lamps, no switch. You are absolutely right about the colors, who indicates that the switch in the enclosed pic is something else. May be an adjustment need, does not know how much or direction, any clue?
Thanks for the video, had solve my problem, if I have had the same gear-equipment. Mine is without the switch in the J-gate and just one at the gear leve. And the one I got, seems to be working, and wrong color. 🤔
1998 XKR, oups,, missed to write that 🤔 ( now adjusted in the first field).
What is needed now is to know where to find the switches, P and Neutral. Or could it be a relay who is partly bad?

Make sure you are looking at the wiring diagram for the supercharged version (SC) rather than NA. It shows the park/neutral switch is on the linear selector, wire colours RU and G. Remember those are the harness colours, not necessarily the colour of the wires at the switch.
ETA: The wiring diagram also shows a NOT IN PARK MICROSWITCH - this looks like a separate switch presumably on the gearbox itself. Maybe someone else can confirm if the Mercedes box has this as well as the ZF but I assume so.
Sounds like the brake switch. When that happens, gently activates the brake pedal on and off a few times to see if you can restore a bit of life into the switch, just enough to start the car. The brake switch tells the computer your foot is on the pedal and allows the shift lever to come off of Park by releasing the solenoid you mentioned. No need to jam the pedal, this switch activates with just the initial bit of pedal travel. You should be able to hear the faint click if you listen for it (it is actually 2 switches being activated together). If this diagnostic is confirmed, there are plenty of posts detailing the (somewhat painful) procedure to replace it. Prices for this switch are a bit all over the place, but individual component switches for this part have been identified and allow for a cheap repair in exchange for a bit of time and basic soldering skills.
Best of luck, keep us posted.
Can you hear the "cliick" when you press on the brake ? It sounds like it comes from the center console.
Just one thing to eliminate.
