New Alternator Broken -- How to reinstall?
On my tenth straight hour now. Old alternator came out using a lever. Old bushing flat like it should be. As I said in another post, there is no need to remove cooling fans. Alternator came out easy. So easy in fact, I will have to buy another one. I simply could not get the new alternator back in place on the bottom. I used a file to shave it down, and I beat the living heck out of the bottom of the new alternator to get it to go back in. I almost had after several hundred whacks with a hammer, but in the end it would not line up. A lot of mistakes have been made -- no doubt. But reinstalling this thing should have taken minutes, not hours. So, while I do not know for sure whether it is broken, given the horrible experience this as been, I don't trust buttoning everything back up. I don't think an alternator can take the punishment I have given it today. So I will buy another one. But why is the thing so tight? Why won't it go back in easily? This cannot be the way these cars were built.

Thanks. Cannot find the thread to which you are referring. Any help would be appreciated. At wits end at this point. So many parts broken for such a simple job. This car will be for sale one way or the other. I replaced the alternator without any instructions on Porsche 928 in 30 minutes.
