New idea for replacing inside rear view mirror

New idea for replacing inside rear view mirror
My inside mirror on my '97 XK8 was bad, so it was going to have to be replaced. I wanted a rear camera, so I went looking for a new mirror that might also function as a rear camera monitor, and found one. It is wireless too, although it can be wired directly. AUTO VOX T1400. What pleased me most is that it came with several adapters to mount the mirror to different stock windshield mounts, and one of them worked pretty well with the stock XK8 mount. Wiring was also easy, as power and ground are already there for the stock mirror- just had to tap the lines.
Mirror is rock steady when driving, and has a good view. The picture quality in the back up view is excellent- better than any of my other cars- some with factory cameras. I'm very pleased with this purchase, especially since I got a super deal on it with Amazon. When in backup mode, the left side of the mirror becomes a monitor for the camera, while the right side remains a mirror.

8 pins connector
went ahead and order the AUTO VOX T1400, should have it by next Monday.
Been looking all afternoon for pinout for the 8 pin connector.
My 02 XKR has Auto lights and rain sensor, trying to accomplish 2 tasks:
use power and ground from this white, 8pin connector
might need to rewire this as I don't think that the T1400 will support these features.
Appreciate if any one can provide the pinout?

Here's what I was able to get from the Electrical Manual. Colors may not match up- Just don't know. I think you will only need the 12V switched power and ground to make it work. You will likely lose the auto dimming functions and rain sensing functions. I didn't have these on the '97, so no big deal for me.
pin 1 White / Red 12v Ignition Switched, fused
2 Yellow Reverse Signal
3 Black / Pink Ground
4 Blue Dimming
5 Yellow / Blue To Headlight Stalk
6 White / Blue Rain
7 Brn / Wht Rain
8 Black / grn Rain

Darbysan,
The AutoVox T1400A worked out great,
Re-used the Jag mirror connector to power Autovox mirror.
Routed camera wiring thru plate lighting and secured behind bonnet carpeting and existing wiring holes
Used reverse wire to power camera and tucked behind cd player carpeting.
Antenna is taped behind carpet covering wall between cabin and trunk
Did not have to drill any hole and Perfect reception - Thanks

auto-vox t1400
The Auto Vox T1400 will not support auto dim or rain sensor, but the Back up camera is much more useful feature that what is lost ( or barely used)
I sprayed lubricant at the rearview mirror clip and that made it easy removal.
Only additional items were the zip ties to secure loose wires in place. and it look darn good. for $130

I was following this threat and got the Auto-Vox T1400U from Ebay. This went on to be a very time consuming task. Ordered the kit in the beginning of July 21. I received the wrong item. They send me a mirror to place over the exsisting old one, while i ordered the T1400U. Be aware. The T1400 is available in verious forms. I send the wrong one back and they send me the right one, which arrived at the customs in the 19th of august. Yes, more than 1 month later but not at my home. Customs is not to be contacted so u waited and waited and waited. Seller contacted the courier and no info was received. Half way true september the seller send me a third mirror and at last, i reeived it last week. I started preparing the task. I placed the camera under the bumper and not behind the license plate. Under the bumper is is very out of sight. Next job is planned for this weekend to connect the camera to the reversing light and stick the senver behind the upholstery near the amphiler and CD changer. After that i will remove the connector from the old mirror and connect the wiring to the mirror and Rain sensor. I will glue the rain sensorback where it belongs under the mirror. The rain sensor doesn't need to be rewired when using the old mirror connector. My T1400U has an auto dimming so i won't use the wires on the connector of the old mirror because of that. Just the wires for the camera view and + and - wires.

I was aware of this item on sale on ebay, but I felt more comfortable buying it directly from Au-Vox store via their Amazon listing.
The product arrived promptly, shipped by Amazon. My questions answered quickly by AutoVox support.
I hope that your install works out better now that you got correct parts, Looking forward to see pictures of the results.

This looks like a viable solution for me. My mirror has a broken clip that retains the ball mount, so it does not want to stay positioned very well. Zip ties hold it okay, but I did not want to spend the money for OEM mirror. I do have a few questions about your install. Where is the 8 pin connector? I'm assuming in the overhead console, but your pictures looked like it may be in the trunk. Were you splicing the power from the 8 pin connector instead of lighter socket? Does the camera get power from near the reverse lights? This might be a good project for winter storage. Thanks

I cut off the eight pin connector from the mirror to keep the rain sensor connector in place between the rain sensor and the female 8 pin connector. Be sure you only cut the wires not connected to the rain sensor connector. i will store it and plug it in the male plug in the overhead light cluster. I only connect the reverse wire and the ground wire to the T1400U wiring loom and see the loom is stored in the light cluster as well. I just need to find out if it will fit. The camera is now under the bumper and not on the trunk lid. I choose that place becasue my license plate is very much attached and i can't risk removing it. The wire loom is fed thrue a hole just above the right tale pipe. That hole is very near the rear lamps and battery inside the trunk. Ground is detached to the ground plug under the stereo.

Here are some of my pictures that might be handy. It shows the camera under the rear bumper. The wiring with the connector to the rain sensor and the mirror attached to the screen. Is it working? No. I have to check the wiring again. I used the yellow wire from the connector to hook up with the red wire of the mirror. Black is ground i hope.

Just finished the job. That is a great addition to the car. The new mirror works great. Clear view behind the car and the distance indicators work fine. So. If your old mirror is leaking and you don't want to spend a fortune on an original to be leaky mirror, go for this Auto-Vox T1400U. Make sure you get the right oine. Without the U, it is a "click over the original mirror with rubber straps"horrific ugly thing. T1400U is the right one. The bracket fits and installation is an easy DIY job.

I tried a different model Auto-Vox mirror/backup cam (the M3) a couple of years ago, and while I loved the idea and the elegance, it proved much too dim to see clearly on bright sunny days. This was in a coupe, not convertible (although it has light-colored Oatmeal interior).
I’ve now switched to a screen mounted underneath the 3 gauges on the dash, but would much prefer to go back to the mirror option, if it is way better than my previous experience…
I’d be interested to hear opinions from T1400 owners with light interiors, whether visibility is excellent/just ok/barely tolerable on sunny days. Bonus points if you’ve actually tried an M3 and a T1400 and can provide even more insight :-)

i had a small screen before the Auto-Vox. That screen was placed left of the steering wheel (LHD car). That operated fine but it had some issues with the wiring. When it worked, i had no issues with the visability even though it was placed on top of the dash just in front of the speaker mash. My car has the cashmere interior. I don't think i will have any visebility issues with the Auto-Vox, although i haven't tested it in bright sunlight. In the darkness of my garage it is very bright. I suspect that the quality of the camera might be the reason for your visebility issues with the M3. If i compare the visebility of the Auto-Vox with the OEM in my Toyota Auris and Lexus IS, it is the same in those cars.

The T1400 in my coupe works. The screen is not always clear, but it looks more like a WiFi issue, since it is wireless. It gets the job done, but not as high a quality as I've had in other in dash systems. I would still recommend it for Jag owners, since it is such an easy transition from the stock unit. Just need to temper your expectations to maybe a 7.5 or 8 out of 10, with 10 being a perfect picture.
