Default New owner with questions

Hi to all, I have recently acquired a 4.0 xkr on a late 51 reg (December). It's a 2001I am no stranger to the forums and have spent a lot of time on the xjs forum as I have been restoring my convertible. The guys on there have been fantastic and held my hand as I have virtually rebuilt the car. Certainly couldn’t have done it without them and I hope that I can also rely on this forum as I strive to get the xkr right. The car came with limited paperwork and an incomplete service history. I have changed the oil and know I need to check the tensioners which is next on the list. My question is about other preventative maintenance I plan to carry out before the winter. I want to replace the water pump and thermostat as well as the fuel and air filters. Is it worth paying the extra for genuine jaguar parts or will Oem suffice. Main query is about the water pump as I know there was issues originally. Many thanks for your assistance and I look forward to being part of this forum in the future.

Many of us are on the other side of the pond and have no idea what a 51 reg means in terms of production year. Please clarify.

Honestly, I slapped an AC Delco metal impeller water pump on my 2 4.0 SC cars. Both have like 20k and several years on them with no issues. I generally evaluate the brand and go from there. I have a Fram air filter, airtex fuel pumps, carquest fuel filter, Wix oil filter and filled with Castrol Synthetic oil. Just a quality part will suffice is my opinion.

I just talked to my mechanic, who gives me tips/advice/wisdom when I do work myself. He said he's used the Gates water pump with metal impellers with no issue. He prefers that one as the gasket provided is the proper one (not paper, as some aftermarket ones come with). I suppose I'll find out in a few days. That said, some prefer to stick with the plastic impellers. I have to say, mine has lasted quite a long time on the original unit.

Default Welcome to the world of X100 ownership

Well, OEM or aftermarket... depends... it’s not any exact science as technology has moved on since your MY2001 was made.

Still the X100 remains a low priced entry to a V8 beautiful car. Make sure you have the metal thermostat tower and I would go with a metal impeller water pump, but depends where you get it.

Stay away from aftermarket items like MAF sensors or alternators. Stay Denso. Also if you’re trying to keep resale value, stay original and don’t do any “funky stuff” like spoilers or slamming the car to the floor.

Start new new threads on any problems you’re having any Forum members with relevant experience will chime in.

I know that mine is a 4.2 , but I got a genuine Ford water pump for mine for literally 1/4 of the cost of the jag part. When I took the the old pump off and compared it to the Ford pump it was identical even down to the numbers in the aluminium casting. Check out the sticky for interchangeable parts and good luck

All the XKRs had the metal tower as standard - one of quite a few upgrades they made over the XK8.

Personally I would be more concerned about the state of the hoses, including the oil hoses to the oil cooler, rather than worrying about the water pump. By 2001 they had fixed the original water pump problems.

Thanks for the information. Would it be wise to change the pump and thermostat with 63000 on the clock? It has 6 service stamps in the book but no receipts showing much . What else would you suggest to double check on? Thanks again.

Brinny,

The Thermostat is a "sort of" long term service item (to be R&R when you renew the coolant fluid.) The water pump is your call depending on your peace of mind. As dibbit said you probably have the metal impellers, so unless you have a problem, I wouldn't bother.

Other items to check/do would include
1. Suspension bushes and ball joints and esp. the upper strut mounts at the front
2. Check drive belts' conditions
3. Grease rear half axles (they have standard zerk nipples)
4.General brake inspection, including the emergency/hand brake which is mechanical drums at the rear (these tend to be neglected).
5. ABS sensors including the cable harnesses at the front (these tended to break due to full steering lock)
6. Drainage funnel pipes at the ends of the windscreen scuttle (as you're in the wet UK)
7. Headlights - problems due to condensation (as you're in the wet UK)
8. Seat runners are clear of debris (often the covering trim piece is missing)

Not sure if you've said you've got the coupe or the convertible, but if it's a soft time, worth looking at the hydraulic hoses at the pump for general condition.

On mine I changed the coolant and the thermostat at the same time - make sure you use the coolant spec in the manual. On top of the normal oil, filter and air-filter change, I also changed the brake fluid, supercharger oil, gearbox oil (and connector sleeve as it was leaking), fuel filter, spark plugs, front suspension bushes, front suspension mounts, anti-roll bar link arms (front and rear), greased the half-shafts, replaced the (rusty) engine earth strap and replaced the tyres as the originals were over 10 years old.

You should also check both your fuel pumps are working:-

The car runs really well now, especially considering its 18 years old.
