Default New Problem to Dive Into

Hi All,

This is my first post! This site has been a great resource for me since I purchased my "new" 1997 XK8 Conv. I have really enjoyed this car for the short time I've had it, and I have fixed many of the issues that I inherited. I am in a pickle and need some good advice.

And yes, I have searched this site extensively to no avail.

My rear quarter windows have both of their "raise" relays energized. This is the case whether the car is on or off. The conv. top works as it should (with the exception of the rear windows) and there are no warnings indicated on the dash.
Both of the window regulators work as they should when jumped after removing the relay control fuse.

Any ideas?

I think it is one of two things: Either you have a short to ground as the green-black wire makes its way from the two rear quarter window raise relays to the Body Processor Module (BPM) or the BPM has a fault. The BPM is behind the glovebox.

These are the steps I would take:

1. Try a hard reset. If that does nothing then...
2. Disconnect the battery, then unplug the BPM, then reconnect the battery. If the relays de-energize then the BPM is the likely fault. If the relays do not de-energize....
3. Disconnect the battery and unplug the BPM again. Use an ohmeter to verify the green/black wire from the relays is shorted to ground (it very likely is). Then trace this wire from the back to the front of the car, looking for where the insulation is damaged and shorting to the chassis.

Thanks, that's kind of the direction I was thinking. I'll be hitting this problem hard this weekend, I'll keep adding info as it comes to light.

It's funny, I might be a sick individual, but I sometimes like to have problems in my life that are a bit tricky......

solving a problem by oneself through logic and reasoning is very rewarding, I always get great satisfaction out of fixing something myself. I'm sure that condition has a name in some thick psychiatrist's book. Let me know if you ever run across it.

I agree, I like to try and figure things out for myself.
It doesn't always work out for the best though.

Omniparient, welcome to the forum, you may want to post in the intro section, you might find it useful to have full access to the forum if you need to access documents etc.

The troubleshooting procedure from WhiteXKR is the way to go on your problem. If you look at Rev Sam's video on how to raise and lower the quarter windows manually, by adding a toggle switch, it might give you more information about your problem. Maybe the previous owner tried to install the switch and botched it. Good luck on finding your problem, it doesn't sound like it should be to difficult to find. Welcome to the Forum.

Default Jaguar Dealer - Are they Serious?

Thanks for all of the good advice. I had intended to tackle my current problem this weekend and realized before I did a hard reset that I didn't have a radio code card.

I've had other cars with no code and have called the dealer and have been provided the code with no problem. My last car was a BMW and they gave it to me very fast. I think I already miss the helpful people there.....

So I call the Jaguar dealer and they rudely said that I would not be recieving the code over the phone and that I had to come in to the dealer and have them fetch it for me. I reluctantly made the trip and they insisted on taking my car into the dealership service bay and proceeded to put it on a lift and "inspect" it. After waiting for an hour, a service writer returned with a multi-page printout that had every bit of information about my car except the radio code. It was yesterday (saturday) and he had to call Jaguar NA on monday to get it for me.

He'll be calling on monday with the code.

It's been raining here and I can wait a few days to get my top situation resolved.

That was not a good first dealership experience. I'm gonna check out the dealer in my neighboring town before going back there for sure.

Most North American cars won't require a code, there have been a few who have needed it. I've had mine disconnected many times without requiring a code.

That's good to know.

I wonder why the dealer couldn't say that.

If I can't get the code on monday, I'm just gonna do that hard reset and try to get the rest of the diagnostics done.

When I first got my S type I assumed the code was needed, the car was at the dealers for something else, I asked for the code and they gave me a print out with no comment.
I believe it is possible to activate the code function on the radio so you never know.

well, its been a while and i just got finished getting my top and windows back in order.

I have no explanation as to why, but when I began my testing, I found that everything had went back to normal. no hard reset needed.

Could this be Lucas giving me problems from the great beyond?
