You know, I was thinking about this and I did not think that the cam lobe was in direct contact with the valve stem. Rather, aren't there tappets (what I was calling lifters) between the cam and the valve? If so, the mystery sound (which I kept describing as similar to a sticky lifter) could be a sticky tappet--no?

There is only a round metal disk (shim) between the cam and the valve stem. The shims come in various sizes to allow setting the valve clearance.
You could have a out of spec clearance that would provide a little click but nothing like a collapsed lifter.

According to a sketch/procedure that someone sent me, the shim fits between the cam lobe and the tappet. So it seems that there are both tappets and shims. In any case the slight ticking when cold could be due to the momentary time it takes for oil to circulate up to the cam.

I went back and researched all the info that I had on the valve/cam and came up with very little. Would appreciate any info you have.
I have taken apart both Volvo and VW overhead cam engines and they had only the shim between the lobe and the valve stem.

To clarify and give credit where it is due on my previous post the "someone" who sent me the sketch was the always helpful and knowledgeable Gus. I just did not want to get him in possible trouble for sending the sketch (being overly cautious)
