I'm amazed, I once bought the ex SWMBO a plate for her birthday (she still has it) for a couple of hundred, but 7K!!!!

Sorry for my late reply, I've been traveling again, this time to London...
No, personalised plates don't sit well with French left-wing/egalitarian politics. They don't really go for flash cars over here, and setting yourself apart through number-plate creativity is definitely out.
I believe the UK record was something like £175,000 a DB9 owner paid for K1 NGS, can't really understand why.
I'm more into self-deprecation myself. The best plate I've ever seen was on a bright red Lamborghini Countach many years ago in London - PEN 1S

In the UK, we're not able to make up letter or number strings the way you can in the US. Our numbers are all issued by DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency) and follow strict formats of letters and numbers. "XKR" just wouldn't be issued here.
