Default No radio lights?

On my 97 XK8 almost every button or switch on the car is alluminated at night BUT nothing on the radio lights up. None of the AM/FM, or 1 - 6 CD selector buttons, or MODE button have any light. Is that correct to not be lite? Hard as hell to change anything in the dark if it is.

Anyone? ha ha ha I am talkign about the radio buttons. The 1 - 6 buttons for the cd's, the am/fm button, the cd button, the fst frwrd/rev toggle, the mode button, none of them aluminate at night, makes it hard to change stuff. Yet the windows buttons, and all that other small stuff lites up.

Have you checked the fuses?

On the RIGHT side fascia fuse panel 9 and 12. On the LEFT side fuse 5 feeds the body control module which feeds the radio.

Beyond that it may be internal to the radio head unit.

If the radio is getting power, i'd find it hard to believe that only the buttons would stop illuminating. Worth a try though. I'm guessing it's internal to the radio. You have navigation in yours?

The wiring diagram for a '97 XK8 show that 12v for the radio "illumination" comes from the dimmer control module: That same line also feeds:
Cruise Control Light
Convertible Top Sw.
Transmission Mode switch

If those all work, problem is probably in the radio OR the connector ( IC 10-3 )

If you want the wiring diagram for your car, send me a PM with your E Mail addr.
It is a PDF file

All those lights work. Must be in the radio.

If you find the problem, would you let me know? Mine does the same thing - LCD lights up, but the buttons don't.

If I decide to just kill my clock entirely on my system, I won't have a need for my old head unit anymore, and I'll donate it. I haven't decided if the clock is ultimately worth it yet. Or, we could swap. That's why I asked if you had the premium Alpine system...or are both head units the same and can be interchanged. That I don't know.

Default problem with radio lights

I had the same problem with "1-6" and also the lights for the heating/AC.

I replaced the dimmer control module (see my other post for how to do it) and the lights now work. In my case the dimmer control didn't work either? Can you dim your interior lights with the control on the steering wheel?

Let me know if you need help with finding the module or installation. I just posted it Good luck.

P.S. Dealer wanted $220 for a new one and I was able to get a used one for $80.

Thanks for the note(s). My radio lights are all dead except for the red indicators on the 1-6 buttons that show what pre-select you're on. I'll check for voltage on that plug IC 10-3.
Mike
..ya know, I just keep cruising this forum and sooner or later one of my things to fix shows up without even asking...
