No start/transmission failure

No start/transmission failure
Looking for any input as to why the following happened.
I have a 2000 XK 8 with 89K miles on it. I drive it ~100 miles a week. Very reliable car. Took it to the golf course and when I finished, it would not start. No grind, just silence. Transmission failure message and could not get the shifter to neutral. Also had an ASC not available along with a CEL. It was a very hot day (94 F) and the car was in direct sunlight.
I only live 1/2 mile away so I walked home. Returned 5 hours later with my code reader. The car started right up, no messages no CEL.
Any thoughts other than "hey, it's a Jaguar"?

Welcome to the forum tcap1047,
Although you've been a member for longer than me, I see you never posted an Intro.
I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XK8/XKR forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your model.

More than likely the brake switch is faulty. VERY common problem. A bit of a pain to replace (it is up the brake pedal in the foot well and awkward to access) and a bit pricey, but nothing terrible. The alternative is to repair it. The switch body comes apart easily and 2 limit switches can be replaced off the small circuit board. Soldering is involved, but only basic skills are required: (de)soldering pins protruding off of a circuit board. There is also an adjustment you need to get right.
The brake switch tells the computer your foot is on the brake, so it engages the solenoid for the shifter release, and you can switch off of park. The emergency alternative is to pull the small black plug on the shifter bezel and bypass the switch (for next time!). Keep in mind these switches typically do not fail outright, and can remain flaky for a while, so a meter test is of limited use.
Best of luck, keep us posted.

Brake switch replaced two years ago and yes, it is a pain. Cruise control stopped working necessitating replacement.
Battery ~ 3 yrs old. Usually first sign of problem with low volts is windows don't hold program and continue to move down with each door operation..
Car has started and run great each time last three uses.

Well, it has run great for all of July. Parked in direct sun today for 4 hrs. Problem appeared again. Fortunately only about 1/2 mile to home. Will wait till about 1900 to see if fault clears like last time.
I have ordered a more advanced diagnostic tool to see if it will yield some info.
