Default Non-working 9005 HID conversion.

Help!

2005 xk8

I pulled out my LED Hi Beams, as they didn’t have any depth of light and installed a set of HID 9005s with high hopes.

I had been so pleased with my earlier installation of HID 9001 low beams that I was hoping for an improvement over the stock bulbs. Well, I’m baffled…neither hi beam functions, they both have +12v going to the ballasts. The odds of both units being faulty I would image is pretty rare but I do not see where I have gone wrong.

The only question I keep having is that there was an 8” length of cable with a male and female connector on each end which was plugged into the ballasts. I removed them as they were inline connections without any ICs and I thought of them as simple input extensions, maybe I was wrong. Since I mounted everything inside the light housings I didn’t have a lot of extra room for these extensions and I don’t really want to pull it all apart again unless it is necessary for replacement of a component.

Any thoughts as to what I might have done wrong?

To recap:

Fuses good

Power measured at input to ballasts

None functioning lights (both)

Default Do you have the igniter?

Wymjym,

I haven’t done the HID conversion on my 99 Jag, but from what I understand HID bulbs need a separate igniter to up the voltage.

Did that come in the kit?

That is the ballast he talks about.

I would double check that the positive and negative are the right way round to the ballast - it won't work otherwise.

Thanks everyone.

FranckC you were on the money. I reversed the plugs and everything works.

For those that wonder how someone can ‘plug it in backwards’;

the ballast has a female receptacle with a locking tang, the jaguar plug has the counterpart on its plug…so I thought the normal approach would suffice, it didn’t. I assume that when these are manufactured this small point isn’t of much concern. Never the less, they now function.

I’ll report back next week after I get a chance to try them out at night and make some adjustments. I can tell from the pattern on my wall they are a major improvement compared to both the original bulbs and the LED conversion I did earlier.

I guess the LEDs will finally reside in my fog light assemblies.

Great stuff. I can imagine how it felt when they did light up.

People have asked me why did I not install LED lights and it was because of reports from people like yourself.

The HID lights make a massive difference. Its one mod I highly recommend.

Thanks for letting me know it worked. I do a lot of writing about our XK100 cars and its always good to get feedback. Thanks again for letting me know it worked!
