Default Nut on Shock Shaft

2005 XK8. I noticed that the nut at the top of the right shock (viewed from the open hood ) has moved from the center to one side. A normal indication when shock mount is worn, but these shock mounts are relatively new and shows no sign of deterioration.

Is this a common occurrence, or is it possible the nut is not tight enough? If loose, is there a tool, short of using a pair of vise grips, that holds the shaft while the nut is being turned?

Thanks

Chuck

What new shock mounts did you install? There have been reports of early breakdown of some of them, particularly those purchased from partsgeek.com....

I recommend the poly shock mount kits from Welsh Enterprises. They have certainly held up well on my wife's 2006 XK8 the past couple of years....

+1 The rubber mount is held in position by the two steel shells and has a steel bushing that the nut tightens on. The mounts are defective.
I have just ordered the Welsh urethane mounts for my 06.

Get the ones that are already assembled. The ones you have to pop rivet together are not what you want to do.
Read the write up Jon89 did when we had that little project. Good read and instructive.

Yes, it's worth the extra expense.

cjd777, Thanks, and have tried to order them from Welsh, but there must be a bug in their web site. Ive ordered from them before with no problem, but this time it's a no go.

I sent them a note and based on a no answer or whatever, will call.

Jon 89, Don't remember who from, but they were listed as like OEM.''that's a lesson learned on my part". Never to old to learn they say and I'm living proof. I'm trying to order the ones you recommend from Welsh and will when I get through to them....

Thanks to you all.

Chuck

Regardless of who I order parts from, I always do so over the phone. You get the chance to discuss the vendor's experience and opinion of the particular component you are interested in, you can confirm that you are indeed getting an exact-fit part, and you can ask if they can offer an additional discount or a lower-than-advertised price. It is always worth the slight additional effort required to order by phone rather than by website....

jon89,
Of course your correct and I normally do use the phone, but I was on the net and was checking prices and when I tried to order, it then became a challenge and I just hate to give in to this darn machine or some silly web site.
Since I'll turn 83 in Jan., maybe I should shut this computer thing down for good. ;-))
PS: We use to live in Fayetteville and I loved the area. Why I ever left and moved to Florida, I'll never know. :-(

Thanks Jon

Chuck

My mother-in-law lives in Florida (Tampa). I have not visited the state since August 1988. Yes, 1988. There is not enough money in the world to convince me to move there....

Chuck, Drive that sucker up here and we will change it out for you. I'm a young 77 and if Jon can't undo it, get the torch.
We do have fun.

777,
I'd love to do just that, but we have 8 parrots and with the better half, the XK just doesn't have the room for all of us. :-(

Anyway, Merry Christmas to all you guys and have a great upcoming Jaguar New Year.

Chuck

Thanks Chuck.
Bring the birds, we had Macaws, Africa Grays, and gobs of others. Nice not to hear them talk back and yell. LOL.
You take care and have a happy Holiday also. You can always call and I will talk you through it.
