Odd overheating problems, please help!

My dad owns a 99 XK8 and it has recently had an odd overheating problem where it would give a warning that the transmission temp was too high. The car has had a history where some grinding was happening in reverse a while back but that just went away and this is the first problem since then. I'm wondering what I should do to try and stop this, transmission fluid change maybe? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hi,
I have had that very same sporadic problem a few times over about five years. Every time that it happened, it was easily cleared up and was really not a real issue.
Try this: Turn your key on and then run the gear shift knob through the gears. You may have to start the car in Neutral.
Let us know if that fixes the problem for you.
Good luck!

My jag service adviser hinted to me once that the pans can leak. it could have lost a little bit over time, now its low. A fluid, filter, and gasket swap could be just what the doctor ordered.
Lots of threads on transmission fluid changes in this forum and the xJ8s as well (same tranny), I'd do a search to be well versed in the process and options on fluid substitutes.
best of luck!

In my case, it was a totally bogus message, as I got it after the car sat overnight. It really had nothing to do with High Transmission Temperature. I was sure happy that it was really nothing at all.................
