Here's from the owner manual, I'd only change the plug if you have a issue. Also don't forget the filter.

Make sure about the type of filter as well. The OEM is designed with a valve to retain oil when at rest so you do not start a cold engine without oil.

The brand Mann has it, the cheap Fram's do not. Difference between the two is maybe $5-$7. Spend the money.

Go for an OEM filter - it's too important a part to mess with.
Costs a bit more but the difference is nothing compared with the cost of the oil you need to buy.

Talking of oil changes has anyone used one of those pump type changers that suck the oil up the dipstick?

I use one on my boat as it is impossible to access the sump, and it works really well.

Dibbit,
Automotive and marine dipstick oil extractors are great and can be used on your car but what about your oil filter? If a new filter is part of your maintenance plan you're going to be under the car anyway. You might as well pull the plug and really empty the oil pan and any junk that might be hiding in that last 1/4 inch of oil oil extractors tend to leave behind. Extractors will remove [most of] the oil but what they can leave behind can be ugly stuff.

Yes, that is the question really, does the vacuum tube reach all the way down? If it does then I am sure that the vacuum pressure will be just as effective, if not more so, than gravity alone.

I'll be changing the oil filter as well, with a genuine Jaguar part. I'll measure the amount of oil I extract as well to see how well the pump does and compare how messy it is to using the drain plug.

Yes - me.
I used one the other week after accidentally overfilling at oil change. It worked just fine to draw of the excess. The trick is to get some plastic tube thin enough and long enough to go down the dipstick channel and not having it come off. I used a length of hospital/patient oxygen tubing.

I tested it out yesterday and the tube that came with the pump goes all the way down the dipstick tube without a problem, so I think I will give it a go.
