Default Oil change problem? Please help

Just changed the oil in my 2006 XK8.

Manual says it holds 8.2 US Quarts.

Before I drained the oil the dipstick said I was in the acceptable range. High in the range.

Drained oil.

Measured what I drained. It was about 5 1/2 quarts which confused me.

Added 8.2 quarts per spec.

Started motor to circulate oil and get the new filter filled.

Stopped engine and let oil settle.

Measured oil level. Dipstick says I am high. Hard to know for sure, but looks about a quart high.

Anybody have an idea what's going on here? Am I overfilled? How could I have done that when I drained it all and added 8.2 quarts?

I am confused.

Thank you,

Jack

When you drain the oil, an amount will be trapped inside parts of the engine and oil cooling system, this is normal. You should only fill to the dipstick mark to be safe. If only 5.5 quarts came out then only 5.5 quarts would be needed to fill it again. You should drain some out for peace of mind.

JTIS says 6.8 litres so 7.2 quarts for an oil change with filter.

7.6 litres for the XKR so just a tad over 8 quarts.

I never measure it, just fill it until the dipstick is OK.

Thank you. The manual says 8.2 quarts.

I'll drain some out.

Thank you.

The manual does indeed say 8.2 quarts for my wife's 2006 XK8. I always allow the oil pan to drain for about 30 minutes before I install a new oil filter and replace the drain plug. Then I add exactly 8 quarts of oil. The dipstick always reads about a quarter-inch over the "full" mark after I've done so. It never concerns me, and I've never had any oil-related issues with the car....

Make sure the vehicle is on level ground when you check the dipstick. A slight incline can make an appreciable difference to the reading on the XK8/XKR.

Default Oil filter

I do assume the engine was warm. A friendly recommendation... Fill the oil filter as well as you can. Easy to do and helps to minimize wear and tear.

I usually do that with cars having vertical orientation of the filter. This one is oriented horizontally. I would end up dumping a lot of oil all over the place if I filled it before installation.

Agreed. It would waste a hell of a lot of oil. I don't attempt to fill it before installing, either....

Drain it, go to bathroom, go get beer, then fill it to fill level. Start it, run it a minute, turn it off. Let it sit, go to bathroom to drain the beer out of yourself. Fill to fill level. Done.

Default Absorbent materaial

Oil filter material can absorb quite a bit of oil. I still install some oil into the filter for a horizontal application. It still a good practice to insure rapid oil circulation after an oil change. Try it... Rich

+1.

I fill the filter about 1/3 to 1/2 full and never spill a drop. Which is more than I can say about pulling the drain pan full of the old oil out from under the car.
