Default Oil Consumption, got any ?

Just curious if low or no oil consumption is the norm on our engines ???? Would like to hear from other owners their oil consumption stories, especially as it correlates to type of car usage.

Also interested in type or brand of oil used, is there a favorite among the owners.

in my case, with an oil change interval in the 4,000 to 5,000 mile range, I don’t have any measurable oil consumption. The engine has never been overhauled and has 178,900 miles on it. Is this the norm on these cars, or an anomaly ? I don’t know what type of oil was used prior to the 116,000 mark when I because responsible for maintenance and repairs.

According to the detailed maintenance records that came with the car, the typical oil change interval was similar to what I’m doing.

I've got 130K on my XK8 and the oil level always sits right in the middle between the "add" and "full" marks. No blue smoke, ever. I always use Pennzoil 5w-30, and change it, and the filter (Mahle OC 602) every six months or so. It is my daily driver, but I probably only put 3K-4K miles on it between changes. That seems to be one thing I don't have to worry about.

I bought my 2000 XKR from California early in 2020 with 93k miles. It had new fresh oil in it, I dont know which brand, but my car had some oil consumption; about 1 litre per 3000 km. Changed the oil last year to Castrol Edge 5W-30 and the consumption dropped to 0,5 litre per 5000 km!

2006 XK8 approaching 125,000 miles. Zero oil consumption between my DIY oil & filter changes every 6,000 miles using 8 quarts of conventional Castrol GTX 5W-30. The car was my wife's daily driver from early February 2012 until late October 2018. She did 18,000 to 20,000 miles per year, lots of highway driving, probably never exceeding 75 mph. Since late October 2018 the car has been just a fair-weather toy doing 1,500 to 2,000 miles per year (mostly me driving it out on the highways and byways in a rather spirited manner to keep it well-exercised)....

The 2003 XK8 Coupe 4.2L has 160K+. 6 years ownership. Change interval 7500 miles with Synthetic 10W30 with Motorcraft FL2021 filter. Usually about 8K-9K yearly mileage. Rarely use more than 1/2 throttle so not raced, mostly highway and some interstate. Driven year round. May use a pint oil , but driver prefers Stout :-)

My XKR coupe is at 86,600 miles and has no signs of oil consumption. Unfortunately, I can't confirm it with the dipstick because I have front and rear main seal leaks and am waiting for the JCNA membership approval to be able to request the loaner tools.

I don't think mine uses much if any. Oil level is between min and max and hasn't changed in about 1 year. I think during my first year of ownership it burned some oil although it probably had too thin of oil in it and was getting passed the piston rings?

I know mine uses some oil but you need to be very careful as unless you leave it overnight you get a false reading. Checking straight after running it shows about a quart lower than after resting.
I have my dipstick marked for the raised level as recommended in the advisory.

…..”.
These are sage words. The V-8 used in the X-100’s drains slower than any other V-8 engine I’ve observed.

With the X-100, checking the oil level during gas stops while going cross country is just an estimate, not the reliable measurement I had become accustomed to.

No noticeable oil consumption at 97k mi, even with the twin screw and all the mods. LiqiMoly 5-30 and OEM filter every 5000 miles.

To one question: These engines seem to be not an oil consumer. I'm not an expert nor have I played one on tv, but from the lots of reading I have done here there is not much talk of oil usage in the these cars. Thanks Henry. Just that short period of the nykasil (sp?) cylinder coating problem not caused by the coating they do use oil but a bigger problem lurked there. I haven't seen any usage in my time with this car.

Mobil 1 5w-30, Wix or Motocraft filter. TM

edit: I fixed a couple typo's. I really should read closer before sending.

They don’t consume it, they mark territory with it instead.

Ditto on the letting sit overnight. Can make a difference of a half-quart read, especially when the oil never fully got to temp. Takes a long time for these cars to get their oil hot.

Highway driving only, no usage 6000K USA miles.

Stop and go town driving and short trips have seen maybe a cup usage over 6000K.

Performance driving such as hill climbing and pushing the car a little, half a quart 6000K.

IMO the usage can also be a result of some vaporization of the oil which will vary among oil products.
