Default P0308 trouble code - Resolved

What a great forum. I have a 2001 XK8 with a P0308 trouble code which indicates cylinder 8 misfire detected. Car has 113,000 miles and I purchased the car with 80,000 miles.

As I see it a good move would be to replace the one coil for cylinder 8, change all the plugs (I have not done it and guessing it was not done before).

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Cheers from Minnesota

It could be a coil, but you might just start with the plugs, since they are only rated for a 100K life.

Also, if any of your spark plug wells are filled with oil, you have a cam cover seal leak, which can also cause a misfire.

I've started a new thread for you so things don't get mixed up.
It would be worth putting your car's details in your signature so others can see them easily.

One more question from the new guy. Should I begin with attempting to resolve the misfire with a solution that is simplier (cheaper) than replacing coil #8 and the plug. I will be bringing the big cat to a repair shop.

thanks from the new guy who is just trying to find his way.

thank you White XKR. Just saw the reply. Will have them replace plugs, take a look at plug #8 for oil inside. Is there any way they can test coil #8 or is it a matter of just visually inspecting the part and going from there.

thanks again all

One trick is to swap cylinder positons of the suspect coil and see if the misfire code follows the coil.

Unrelated, but do you know if your secondary tensioners have been upgraded?

Just to make sure which Cylinder is number 8, use the following:

I have had the car for 6 years and nothing has been done with secondary tensioners. Guessing nothing has been done with that. What exactly does that part do.

What does it do you ask, well if it breaks it will cost you 5 to 6 thousand $$$$ and maybe irreversible engine damage.
It would be very wise off you to look into your tensioners via the mechanic that services Jaguar cars.
This is very serious potential break down with your cars mileage.
I would almost be surprised to find they have not been changed over with that many miles and know noted break downs.
trust me you will not be a "new guy" for long, if you do not get the chains and tensioners changed out.

They are internal parts to the engine and critical.

Happy Motoring...

thanks vettegood. Will have that looked at but guessing after some research it probably has been changed due to the high miles.

Any suggestions on after market warranties?

vettegood's right, I really wouldn't guess at it - in the absence of documentary evidence you will need to look at them. There's plenty of threads about the problem.

thanks everyone for your help. Cyliner #8 had a significant amount of oil which was the cause for the p0308 trouble code and the reduced engine performance light. New plugs and new casket. I had them cleaned and rerarrange the boots for the coils which has solved the problem and the car runs like it should.

I put the car away for the winter and only put on 5000 miles per year on the car. Next spring I will have someone look at the secondary tensioners and hopefully smooth sailing for awhile.

Cheers y'all

Why don't you read the posts and try looking at the tensioners yourself?
It isn't difficult and as someone said 'it's a good bonding experience with the car'
-makes it lose a bit of the 'black magic'
I'm flagging this as 'Resolved' to help others searches
