p1000 and p0760 codes ?
Hey gang, just got the 97 XK8 out of storage and of course I get the gearbox fault on the display. I am not freaked out yet as I had it last year and was able to get rid of it by charging the Batt. I have an appointment to have the alternator checked in a couple of days. Im hoping one of you can give me a heads up on the codes before I take her to the doctor. My plan is to buy a new battery first and bring it along. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
p.s. finally building a garage ! I will post another thread later to get advice on that and maybe post a pic or two.
Thanks in advance guys,

From your top post, it appears the car sat stored over the winter and not in a garage? What kind of climate conditions, as I cannot determine from your original post. Solenoids can become stuck sometimes just from gummy fluid that has sat a long time where condensation builds up inside the pan and mixes with T fluid. Just starting it, letting the trans come up to op temps can free the solenoid. And, very touchy topic, changing the fluid out sometimes helps. Stuck solenoids are more common in the Jatco trans used in the X-Type . This doesn't preclude a possibility of a failed solenoid too, which can be purchased and replaced.

Transmission shift solenoid “C” and I think you are looking in the right direction when you talk about having your battery checked. It seems to be the creator of misleading problems. I would charge or replace the battery and clear the codes after jotting them down. If they come up again then check it out.

Got her back from the doctor . Code was p706. Apparently a shift code. What I have to do now is change from park to drive slowly letting the trans go through each position. The sensor malfunctions and trips a code if I don't.
I hope the slow gear change works. My plan is to reset the codes if I forget and shift too quickly. I bought a new Battery anyway and changed brake fluid, transmission fluid, oil and had the coolant tested. new MVI all for 468.00. Thanks again for the input.

Gordo,
Yes, a fresh battery always helps in a late model Jaguar. Several electronic gremlins start to appear if a battery drops below 12.1v, then gets worse around 10/11v and, noone to my knowledge, has been able to catalog what those are. Same issues with the X350. Don't know about the X358, but I guess the same. On the other hand, batteries in my X300 seem to last forever with no gremlins.
I've created a battery replacement plan on my XK8 and X350. I bought the duralast batteries for both cars (same 49-DL), I give them about 24-30 months, then pull them, short the positive/negative terminals and bring them back for a new one at a warranty adjusted price. Just did my XK8 about 3 weeks ago and the replacement cost $46 (roughly $50 every 2 to 3 years, or about $20 per year to maintain a healthy new battery).
BTW, at 30 months, my last XK8 battery would routinely drop to 20/30% charge in a couple of days and barely make a full recovery on a trickle charger.

Thanks for the info fellas.
I have another Q for ya. Does anyone know what kind of repair and or dollars I would be looking at to fix this issue ? I have already tripped the code again. It was no problem to reset the code, but i'm thinking this could get old fast. I don't want to have to reset codes every couple of days. If I can get a fix for 500 bucks or so I would rather not live with this issue.
Thanks again !

To replace the transmission shift solenoid, you're going to have to open up the transmission again... save that fluid you just put in. I did a little googling, and a jag mechanic estimated $600 for the replacement. Take with a grain of salt and do not hold me liable.
BTW, did you get the code only after you 'changed' the transmission fluid? I only ask, because this code can apparently be triggered from low fluid levels. If the person doing the 'drain n fill' didn't warm up the transmission to the proper temperature before sealing it back up, trouble on the horizon.

I'm sure my guy heated it up first. He has many Jags himself. Absolutely amazing shop. Some of his own cars are an XKE , AMX, GT500 ,Mach 1 , 63 Vette split window. Next time I go I will take some pics.
Sorry went off topic for a sec, thanks again for the advice and searching that for me. Amazing forum as always !
