Penetrating oil
Although I swear by Aerokroil, it is not universally available, and if I need something quick, I mix ATF with kerosene about 70/30. Its not so volatile and will not damage things like acetone and works as well or better.
I meant to say that I got my "oldmots" name because I used to restore classic European bikes. I would not have been able to do it as well without Aerokroil, it is the best by a large margain. I was able to win some pretty nice shows with the bikes that Aerokroil helped me save. This stuff could be put on an exhaust manifold whose nuts were unrecognizable and I could just unscrew them a day later. It is al;so nice for applying to a stainless exhaust system, it gets rid of the surface rust and leaves a coating that prevents more.
An impact wrench was the best investment I have ever made when talking about rusted nuts and bolts.
However, I went to a tractor salvage yard some years back, and the guy took along a spray bottle.
He sprayed the nuts to the part I needed...waited a couple of minutes...sprayed it again...and several minutes later, the nuts came right off with very little effort.
I asked him what his magic formula was, and he said "Nothing but water"...he continued by saying "It was water that made the nuts rust in the first place, and it's water that will penetrate the rust".
Anymore, water is all I use and it works better than any penetrating oil that I have ever tried in the past.
OK...sometimes water and a good blast of heat from my torch, but good old water has never failed be since.
