Cool power door locks

i have a 98 xk8 that the key fob won't lock the doors. When I use the fob the alarm sets but the doors don't lock. The fob works on the trunk (boot) perfectly'

251 Views but 0 Replies - let's get some discussion going.

1. does the driver's door lock/unlock with the key?
2. can you hear any 'clunks' inside the door when you press the remote?

It could be a disconnected operating rod or a failed Door Latch microswitch. You're going to have to take the door card off to see and hear exactly what is happening.

DrF, please view this link for a question about a similar problem. The way to diagnose this for you, if the ideas in the thread don't solve it right away, will be to acknowledge and answer all the questions that were launched earlier in the discussion to the original poster. Looks like they all apply to you too.

Don't know how new you are, but FYI: I used an advanced search on Door Locks & with my name as a poster in the discussions. It brings up a bunch of threads but I remember I've discussed this issue several times before, that's why I added my name to the search.

Let us know how you do after reading the thread, and if you can't solve it please do post and answer the questions so we can help you get to the root of it all.

John

If I may revive this thread...I have the same issue on my recently purchased 97 with the fob arming the alarm but not locking the doors. When I test drove the car they worked properly. After I drove the car home they started acting up with the passenger door no longer locking and the driver's door cycling locked to unlocked several times before finally locking. Now neither door will lock with the fob but the fob will arm the alarm system. I checked the fuse in the passenger side fuse box and the 10A fuse has been replaced with a 20A. I don't consider that to be a good sign. The doors do not autolock when the car is placed in drive now but they did during the test drive. I dug through the repair orders the previous owner provided and there are a few instances of issues with the door locks noted.

Yes it unlocks with the key and i hear a clunk noise now I need to find time to remove the door cards and see if its a mechanical problem.

I pulled out the passenger door latch assembly today and the motor in the power door lock actuator is bad. Frankly the motor looks like something out of a child's toy. I found a salvage latch assy. on EBay for $50 so hopefully that will get me squared away.

Last night I pulled the lock actuator module off of the latch assembly I purchased on eBay and installed it on my latch assembly. My door locks now work properly.

I want to thank the team who runs this forum, I would have had a difficult time diagnosing and repairing this issue without the information I was able to gather here.

Well done. I hope Wayne and I will be reporting a similar success story once we tackle the drivers door latch microswitch replacement job on my wife's 2006 XK8....

If you could use any of the switches I have left over from my project PM me with your address and I'll drop them in the mail for you.

Thanks for the offer, but I am planning to stick with brand-new microswitches as long as they can be cross-referenced and sourced. As fragile as these things are, I do not want to roll the dice with used ones....

Have you tried to open the doors from the other front door. I occasionally have my drivers door not open and I do 1 of 2 things to open it.
First I try the button on the dash the locks and opens the door if that doesn't work then I reach over and open the front passenger door and that does it.
I had to replace the passenger lock due to this flakiness and now the drivers door is at it.

Joe,

Wayne and I fixed the door lock issues with new microswitches in the door latch assemblies back in early April 2019. We went with new Omron D2SW-3L3MS microswitches ordered from mouser.com. No pesky door lock issues with this car since then....
