Default Question about Boot Floors

From the Department of Nits Department

I have been trying to sort out just how the boot floor is supposed to fit in a 2004 convertible with a space saver spare. The Jaguar parts manual lists 4 different floors - two for space saver spare equipped cars (with a changeover point) and two for "non space saver equipped" (again with a changeover point). The part numbers are:

space saver spare
GJA 3618AH to VIN 031302
GJC 3618AA from VIN 03130

3non space saver spare
GJA 3618BG to VIN 031302
GJC 3618BA from VIN 031303

I think the main difference between the space saver spare and non is the size of the floor itself. The space saver cars would have a slightly smaller floor that fits lower in the boot, whereas the non-space saver cars would have a floor that fits flush with the battery cover. My VIN is larger than 031303 and I have a floor with the GJC 3618AA part number molded into the plastic shell. I would expect the floor to lay flat on the second, lower ledge at the open end of the trunk and at the bottom of the carpeted panel at the rear, but best I can do is get it to tilt up from the bottom of the carpeted panel. Is this the way is is supposed to work, or should the floor lay flat?

I can’t be of much help , as my car is a 2002 ZKR coupe, and might be different.

i have the space saver tire, and it appears to have never been used or deflated (containing original English air I suppose).

The trunk / boot center panel can be installed two different ways: it can go down low, barely above the spare, giving you more space. Or it can be installed level with the two side panels.

Which gives you a flat surface from one side to the other. But at the expense of have less cubic feet storage area.

either way is “correct”.

i believe this is outlined in the owners manual, but I’ll have to look it up later to be sure .

Thanks - I can get my floor to sit level with the other panels, but anything heavy will cause the rear of the floor to drop down. I can't get the front to drop down to the lowest level. Although, come to think of it, I haven't tried setting the front down low first. An experiment!

Yeah, it can take a bit of jiggling to get it in!

My US spec 2004 convertible is fitted with the smaller spare tire. It is quite a finicky fit to get the floor to the lower position. I have found that fitting it forward end first, then finaggling the rear edge down past the taillight contours works best. A litte force is required. Quite un-Jaguar-like really!

That’s the way I do it also: forward end downwards first , then the rear end follows nicely without any force .

however, I carry long packages often. So I normally have the center section in the raised location so I have a long flat surface/

Interesting. The fit on my floor is off by at least 3/8" too long front to rear. Side to side is fine. There is no "follows nicely" at all.

was your car involved in a collision perhaps ?

The center addition should fit easily in either location, high or low.

It has not been in a collision.

I dug a little deeper (literally) and found a cable that had come adrift from it's clamp behind the trim at the rear of the trunk. Tucking that back where it belongs did the trick. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Don’t know if it’s this cable you are seeing, I doubt it. But there is a small cable on the battery side that is supposed to protrude into the boot / trunk space. It’s for emergencies if one finds oneself locked inside .

Like you were working inside of it and the wind blew the lid shut. Or you were being kidnapped Etc.

my cable is rather short, so I attached a zip tie.

The owners manual shows the emergency cable with a handle, and in a different location (for the convertibles ???).

No, that's not it. It was an electrical cable that runs along the bulkhead behind the rear seats.

that sounds like a cable you don’t want to pinch with the trunk panel(s)……

Think I had to cut a bit off mine to get it to the lower level

I was considering that. Fortunately I found the wayward cable first. Now the floor fits on either level.
