Default VIN Location

So, having googled searched high and low, I can't find the "stamped in metal" vin number on my European 09 3.0 D XF. I looked for a flap in the carpet at each of the seats and scoured around the spare wheel well, around the battery and still no joy. I have my annual inspection on Tuesday and want to avoid the hassle I had with my XJ6 when the tester wouldn't accept the vin number located behind the windscreen . I was being failed until a quick Google revealed it to be by the battery.
Stickers etc. won't do, it has to be the permanent stamped number. Thanks in advance.

Fold down the back seat, the VIN is stamped in the metal part of the opening between the boot and the cabin, right hand side, you'll probably need to remove the carpet trim from the boot to see it.

Or contest / appeal the tester's ridiculous decision - they should know how to find other VIN markings or accept the usual one!

Sounds not fit to be a tester at the moment.

I know what you mean but they have the final say, on the basis that if they can't be satisfied that the front and back of the car are one and the same vehicle, they can't be satisfied that it's roadworthy. My XJ6 passed on everything except the vin that they couldn't find, so they were happy to fail it. Go figure.

Just checked that and no joy. Dropped seats, folded back the carpet and the trim on both sides and had a good look see but it's not there. Thanks for the input.

People tend (wrongly) to think something similar here - but there's an appeals process. You're describing an ideal appeal. If the VIN has to be there then a company like Jaguar will have provided one - no doubt. So here you'd appeal and have an easy win. Most likely you also can appeal.

That's my plan B if needed. I'm going to ring a main dealer tomorrow and see if they can shed some light on it. I can also ring the test centre head office to see what their position is . Thanks again.

If a tester tried that sort of reason for a fail I'd:
1. appeal
2, see he lost his job or at least was forced to retrain
3. and would tell him those as he issued the fail

Testers need to be honest, diligent & fair. They can put in a bit of genuine effort if needs be to find the VIN. It should not be up to the owner to do that.

Happy days. I found the vin as per cambos instructions. Originally I had looked on the floor area between the seat and boot area, as opposed to up along the right hand side of the opening. I dropped the rear drivers side seat ( RHD ) and then disengaged the little black catch at the top of the bolster. The bolster drops forward and the opening flap in the carpet trim is exposed. Open the flap and there it is! Many thanks to all who responded.

Just an update. Did my test this morning and she flew through without a single issue , including the VIN location. I think the tester knew where it was as I saw him with the boot opened and leaning in through the back door right where the VIN is located . Happy days for the next two years . And by a happy coincidence it was on this very day last year that I bought my XF. A nice anniversary present!

?? the VIN on my car (USA version) is located in spot #4 on the image posted by Cambo, isn't that standard world-wide? Whenever my local repair shop orders parts the first thing they do is take a picture of it through the windshield and then make sure to order the correct part.

Yep, every car has multiple VIN numbers on it. However there is one that's stamped into the chassis which is required by some countries to register the car, as all the other ones (like the one by the windshield you referred to) are just stamped into metal plates which can be reordered/faked.

Hi, glad you found it, I also had to go home from the MOT's office as we could not locate the stamped VIN which is needed here as the windows plate is easy to forge. I called the dealer who told first at floor under front left seat, then in boot on top of spare wheel well and we removed spare wheel also. But others please note that it may be very hard to see as there is a small flap in the carpet and if this has never been opened it was hard to see. I needed a headlamp and glasses to spot it in the black carpet!

Found another tag when the trunk was open, in the groove on the left side opening when looking onto the trunk.
