Default Rear Differential Oil Gasket

Being told by my independent garage in Georgia USA that need to replace rear differential oil gasket to stop leaks, but the part has been discontinued.
They are proposing using a sealant instead -- Permatex PERMATEX® Ultra Black® Maximum Oil Resistance Gasket Maker.
Does this work, or is it an issue?
Car is a 2005 XKR convertible with 43k miles.

do not fix the leak

you can still get the pinion seals for these but these guys will mess up preload guaranteed.

you need loctite to stop the splines from leaking not rtv as a main seal 🤣🤣🤣

What is a rear differential oil gasket ?
The rear cover on the diff has NOT used a gasket for decades. (just a 'mastic' type sealant)

Cool Check Engine Light

Successfully changed/replaced differential oil.
New problem is Check Engine Light.
To resolve it have replaced a couple of leaking air hoses, but so far does not fix issue of "intermittent restricted performance/constant check engine light" and I do not sense a change in performance while driving. After each repair visit, will drive for 30 minutes, turn off, rest for 5 mins, restart, drive again, turn off, restart, then get the restricted performance/check engine light. Mechanic getting "running lean" code, but about a year ago, it pulled code P0456, which is evap issue, I believe.
Should next move be to replace fuel filler cap?
I trust mechanic, and there is no one else available (dealership declines to help because of age of vehicle -- 2005 xkr convertible, 45k miles).
Just wandering in the forest!!

What is the NEW DTC?
You can stop by an AUTOZOE or ORIELY type parts store and they will tell you what code numbers are present.(or we can guess?)

Post them here.
A year old code means nothing.
