Any thoughts?
Glad you feel not hurt. You should see an MD just to be sure. Very sad about your car. I'd be inclined to administer the punishment listed in other reply if anyone should hurt one of mine. Just no excuse for getting that close. :-(

It is generally accepted that the changeover to metal-bodied tensioners took effect from engine # 010813xxxx. The MY is not a reliable guide.

If the 'Points of Interest' in the attached doc. is correct, the car was built just around that changeover date and is MY2001, although it may not have been registered in the US until 02.

Pretty looking car - may be worth asking the question.

it's right on the edge, must have the engine serial number past 010813 to be sure. Ty

If you talk to the owner he may have a carfax on it. Or run the VIN. The Carfax will show service history and if the dealers or a shop did the tensioners then it should show up.

Carfax is not normally that complete regarding all service history. Actual investigation of the tensioners will be prudent in this case....

That is my understanding 010813 0001 onwards. The VIN by itself isn't reliable as the engine will have been produced earlier than final assembly. I believe a dealership, given the VIN, can provide the engine # from the orginal build sheet.

thank you. Unfortunately the Jaguar dealers I've talked to could care less about things of that nature. That is if they respond at all. They don't seem to care about helping. I hope all are not that way.

Markmbaha1,

To solve all the problems you are having with the Insurance Company, it might be best to "Take the Money and Run"', down to Florida and Buy this White Convertible.....It is a good-looking one...Don't worry about the Tensioners....You can have them replaced, as they have over 80,000 on them now.....it might be a good thing for you to do even with the Good Tensioners (80,000) would be a good time to have the whole Car looked over by someone with some "Know-How".....These Cars, with a little care, will continue to run well for another 80,000 Miles without much to do!
The Owner doesn't seem to want to talk much about the Car. How does he expect to sell the Car if you can't talk with Him?

Years ago I totalled off my 1980 Trans Am due to being rear ended. I took the insurance money, bought another one and spent some extra money to buy my totalled TA from the wrecker. I then had a "new" one and a parts car. I still drag the old girl out once in a while for a spin in the summer.

I for one like the white, I think it is very classy. That looks to be an excellent example with full history and a ONE owner to boot. I don't think the price is bad either.
I have fleeting thoughts of parting with my '03 MY conv. but then I come to my senses and forget such heresy. It is such a pleasure to drive. TM

I like it, If the owner would get back to me we may move along, waiting now. I'm just more partial to silver and black interior and black top. We'll see.

I kept my car title clear by not letting the insurance total the car, and I'm very glad. To accomplish this, I had my own reputable shop estimate the repair cost at an amount below the car's market value, which I the claims adjuster had offered me. I had the work done economically at my leisure, incrementally over time. Sadly, many XK8's go to the crusher when the repair cost exceeds the market value, which is often the case, even when the damage is cosmetic and the car is still as safe as ever. Insurance companies are happy to simply write a check for market value; it lets them avoid all the complexity and uncertainty involved with the tackling a repair and dealing with the owner who wants the car as perfect as it was before the collision. I enjoy the car I rescued from the crusher. Its clear title lets me insure it with my mainstream insurance company, which only insures clear title vehicles.
