Rear hub, what could be different?
Hi has anyone any detailed knowledge of hubs?
I have put a second hand rear hub on my XK8 as the bearing was on the way out and I found a reasonably priced second-hand unit as a way of avoiding the issues with getting an exact fit when replacing just the bearing. It was advertised as an XJ8/XK8 96-02 rear hub from a Jaguar breakers. After fitting the the hub the hub nut did not quite look correct as threads from the drive shaft were only about 2/3 of the way through the nut, I proceeded to lower the car in hope that when there was some weight on the hub it would help push the shaft through the hub a bit further. But even when back on the ground and the nut fully tightened the shaft is still only 2/3 the way through the hub nut. So I checked the wheel alignment (by eye) and the track and chamber look identical on both sides which implies the hub is the same overall thickness and the shaft is pushed home. And yes I have only fitted one locating collar!
Any thoughts?

Did you replace the carrier and the hub? Just the hub?
Did you put a new rubber sealer on the hub? If it's on backwards the hub will not seat right and will protrude.
Guess I'm honing in on whether you put the hub into the carrier or not. There is a proper orientation to the spacers.
Tell us more please.
John
BTW how much does the hub protrude from the rear through the speed sensor ring? That will tell us a lot too. I remember when I had that outboard rubber seal on backwards the hub barely made it to the sensor.

I usually ask for the hub AND AXLE complete when I get a salvage part.
That way I know the preload on the bearings is setup (hopefully original factory) and no missing parts.
Then just replace the bearings themselves with original shim and spacer. (or repack grease if you thing the bearings are OK)

Sorry for hijacking your thread. But I am also in the process of working with the rear end and needs to disassemble the rear hubs. Anyone who can share the procedure of how to do it? The hub nut is awfully tightened and I have trouble to get it loose. How much torque should it be tightened with?
Higgins do an advanced search on "rear bearing" posted by "chilly philly. He posted as in depth instruction guide that I too have used.
I sure hope you have the wheel/tire on the ground as you try to loosen the hub nut. I suppose if you have a really powerful impact wrench you might get it loose otherwise.
As I recall it is 350 ft lbs torque.
Don't forget you need to use a new hub nut for reassembly.

I had time to dismantle the hub again today and found the Hub is different; Face to face it is the same length but the 'dish' where the nut sits is deeper on the original hub.
