Default rear subframe bush mounting rust

I spotted this yesterday while working on the wheel arch. I hope I can get it cut out and new welded in without having to take the damper and spring out the way. Will also need to check the other side.

Don't tell anyone but I did have a look at the price of X150 models today.

Hate to say it but with the rust your dealing with the X150 would be looking real good to be, provided I could afford it.

RD,
I feel for you here: your car looks superb on the outside.

I've been giving mine a close eye ever since I read on this forum about the horrific rust issues that can afflict the XK. The original owner paid in excess of £53,000 for the privilege back in 1998, and I'm saddened by the lamentable effort expended on rustproofing our cars. I know that the UK dumps ridiculous amounts of salt on the roads, but there is no excuse on a prestige automobile like this. I fully get the business rationale behind planned obsolescence, but what price sales when dubious manufacturing can make a car potentially dangerous after a relatively short time.

Don't get me wrong; I love my car and it's build quality is much better than the cr*p I drove in my teens back in the 70's, but if Peugeot can build a family car that is remarkably tin worm resistant then why can't upmarket Jaguar? (I have a 97 306 and can't fault it)

No axe to grind as we're lucky that the climate here is friendly; good job it is so as there's precious little on the underside of the car to protect the important bits..

Rant over.

I must admit that the X150 is definitely growing on me, particularly the coupe and alumin(i)um has a very definite appeal . Absolute heaven would be a V8 F-type - what an awesome car to drive! - but I'm dreaming now...

Mike

P.S. Mum's the word...

I found a couple of other UK owners with the same problem, they removed the rear sub frame to get good access and have good pictures of the process.

I had planned to do a rear end suspension rebuild at some point in time so will do this at the same time.

Hi RD - I am a new UK member with a 2000 XK8 Cabriolet that had failed the MOT due to chassis rot where the rear suspension bolts to it (level with the rear of the centre sill section, i.e. in front of the rear wheels) both sides.

I presume I will need to somehow prop the car up on axle stands and drop the rear suspension to let a welding expert repair the chassis rails there but trawling through the forums and youtube I still can't find a good pictorial guide of the work this entails - just the task of removing the exhaust looks like it will wreck it as the joints appear rusted together.
Can you please point me to the links you have found.

Thanks Mark

I have not done the job yet but I am sure there are a few threads here on the job.

Does anyone on the forum know if I need to remove any part of the exhaust to remove the rear suspension.
The Jag manual doesn't appear to mention it coming apart or off but I did see a post where they cut the pipes to the rear silencers to get better access to some of the bolts. I don't really want to do this as my exhaust whilst rusted together at the joints, still works OK.
If anyone has removed their rear axle I would appreciate your input - if you have photos of the process, even better.
If not then it may be me documenting the process.

Thanks Mark

Here is a picture of one showing you can leave the exhaust in place.

This is exactly what I was looking for.
Cheers

is this really true? can you really drop the rear end/axle out of the car without disturbing the exhaust?

I can look around a bit but was just wondering

Whoa!!! Deep bow and thanks! Really, looks scary as heck thinking about doing this on the street in front of my place (did my XJS rear end this way), due to all the bits and pieces, I think is a NOOOO go. But it's good to know that it's possible. Shoot, with all that work I don't even know if adding in some exhaust disassembley even makes THAT much a difference, lol...

Love this. I'll do it, but I guess I have to find a place.
