Replace bearings instead of whole tensioner
Hi all.
I have the belt tensioner and idler off the car and access to a press just need to identify and procure the right bearings. Anyone done this? Any cross references and suppliers?
I have a '96 XK8 4L.
Cheers.
Paul.

Paul, there's a good chance that the width, centre hole and outside diameter will indicate that it's a standard bearing with a code like 6003 or 6203 etc. It may even be written on the side of the bearing. Web sites like simplybearings or bearingboys give you options on how to find the right bearing from these measurements. You don't need one of the high temperature, loose-fit bearings, just the standard sealed item will do the job. I always buy the best 'named' manufacturer.
If you find out which one it is, let us know would you?? I think I'm in for the same task soon.

Hi looops & oddjob,
Presume that you mean the serpentine idler & tensioner?
Both pulleys can be replaced pretty cheaply with the same item - Dayco and Gates do a replacement - check out DaveInVA's post on the non-OEM interchangeables sticky. I got a pair off Amazon US delivered to CI in about 3 days - cheaper than from UK (surprise surprise). Cost ~$40 for the pair delivered. Saves messing around with a press and I doubt the pulleys are much dearer than the bearings alone.
Note that the original idler is plastic & has a lip on one edge; this lip was dispensed with on later cars. Also, if you haven't found out yet, the tensioner pulley bolt is left-handed.
I'd replace the belt as well unless it's pretty new...

Mike

When I did my chain tensioners I replaced all bearing in the belt tensioners also. I purchased them from Napa, they were roughly $10.00 each. The part #"s are 6203-2RSJ and 6303-2RSJ. The 6303-2RSJ was $32.00, my car is a 2002 XKR. I believe the 6303 was for the supercharger idler, the numbers should be on the old bearing as previously stated by oddjob2000. It is a very DIY job just make sure the tensioner is in good shape and spring is good and strong. There are wear marks on the tensioner, check them before you remove the belt if you can see them, they tell you if the spring is still good. Good luck.
