Default replacement engine cam tensioners

Hi-newbie here-no Jag yet. If I find an early XK8 that had its engine replaced under warranty, I understand there will be a green tag behind the right cylinder bank. Did the replacement engines have upgraded tensioners? Would they have the same serial number format as the normal engine series?
thanks!

The engine serial number will follow the standard format: YYMMDDHHMM

There is no way to know what series of tensioners were originally or subsequently installed except that all engines after serial 010813xxxx had the metal versions.

Someone is going to come along shortly and ask politely that you post an introduction in the new member area.

Welcome
Depends how early the car is,nicasil was the problem so prior mid 2001 probably the tensioners would be gen1.

Would be due to be replaced anyway after 15 years or so. Be on the safe side and factor that in,not that it's a big issue really.

It will look like this if it is an "official" Jaguar rebuilt engine.

Welcome Altosax,
I wouldn't count on a replacement engine having metal tensioners. The only way to be sure is to remove the valve covers and look.

I'm in the UK so might be slightly different but .......... my engine was replaced in January 2002 and the replacement had "second generation" tensioners which, when I opened up the engine to change them, were actually still in good condition. Changed them anyway using "zip tie" method - negligible cost for high peace of mind !!

My XJR had a Jaguar replacement engine in May 2002 and this had the plastic tensioners. Just replaced them last week and they were not in good shape. Cracks were forming and the top Left Bank was very heavily scored.

Check them (and if plastic, replace) urgently.

At this point, I've decided to save my nickles and nerves and wait for a 4.2L car with all service records. Now I just have to worry about the transmission and dig into those threads! It's interesting that the 2006-2007 crossover years have equally priced cars out there. The new transmission and aluminum
body is great-just wish they hadn't traded elegance for aggression...

Replacing the tensioners is not really that hard of a job. The cost is also very low.
