Default Replacing Differential Pinion Seal

The diff pinion seal on my 2003 XKR leaks slightly. I can get the part for under £40 but dealer wants over £400 for doing the job for me. Is this an easy DIY job if I can get the car lifted up properly? Does it require draining the diff oil?

Thanks,

You'll need a dolly the correct size to knock the new one in, and it helps to have a removal tool to pick the old one out. While at it, replace the breather tube.

Jag: It's pretty involved. Your going to have to drop the unit I am guessing.
I discovered this just trying to change the oil at the tranny shop. They couldn't even reach the drain plug.
The good news: The guys at the shop said it looked like a Ford unit, and that will save you some money.

Your dealer probably wants to replace the flange with the seal as that is the way Jaguar sells it now. If you can find an independent to just replace the seal, you should be able to save some money (I didn't realize someone sold just the seal until after I had mine done)

Coventry West sells just the seal and if you look around you may be able to find someone in the UK that does the same.

Here is the info you will want to read. The seal was available but later Jaguar made a flange seal kit and that is what is recommended.

Be careful with the seal as it can be installed incorrectly and fail.

Thanks all! I can get the seal for £31 or the flange kit for £140. Shop wants £360 for doing it so might as well let them do it as it does sound a bit more involved. I don't even have a garage to do it in :z

Ripper, that is pretty close to what mine ended up costing (with the flange kit) [if I did my £ to $ conversion right]. Mine was a little less, but my independent works for peanuts compared to the other shops around.
