Restricted Performance/Console issues
Hi. Just bought an XK*-2001-86000 miles. New chain and tensioner-restricted performance and check engine light came on after filling up while at idle after driving 6 blocks. Cruise light won't go off and sport mode light won't come on. ny help is appreciated. No codes available yet. Thanks

You really need to get the codes. Resitricted performance can be the result of a huge scope of faults.

hi White XKR. I want to get the codes. Unfortunately there is an Ice Storm in my area and not having the car 48 hours yet didn't want to chance racking it up too quickly. Hopefully when the weather gets better I can get the codes and post them so the expertise on the forum can help. I had no codes, however, with the cruise and sport-mode buttons so I am unsure anything will show up on those. Thanks!

When you get the codes read, post the actual codes here - not what the person who reads them tells you they mean. The generic descriptions on codes are often different from the Jaguar descriptions and can be very misleading.
For the Sport and Cruise button issues, check the switches aren't sticking or broken before looking at possible problems with the functions themselves.
To do this, you'll have to remove the J-Gate surround. Follow this link to an excellent series of videos by member, Reverent Sam in the 'stickies' at the top of this section:

There's one on removing the J-Gate and another on taking the whole Centre Console out.
His XK8 only has the Sport button but the removal procedure is the same on your XK8 with both buttons.

Welcome Paul, I smell a rather unfair sale tactic.
P1000 is indicative of a recent clearing of the codes, or a new battery installation. That tells you the drive cycles haven't been fully completed on 02 sensors, evaporative system, etc. Disregard for now, and be a little peeved if it makes you feel better towards the seller (unless it was disclaimed that the car had some recent 'repairs' made)
You've got misfire codes there too (PO306, P0307...probably related to P171 also - lean on bank 1), however if they're current, or old, I can't tell. Is it running a little rough, or is the CEL blinking at you? If its blinking that's really bad and you should not drive it ANYWHERE until you can get the misfire remedied.
Sorry can't go into detail on the others for you right now.

Hi H2O Boy. There is no blinking going on. The check engine light is and has been solid. The car seems to be running really smooth. Can't even feel it run at idle. The owner did state he put in an upgrade timing chain/tensioner about 300 miles prior to purchase. The light came on after I drove it home and had it overnight and put on over 80 miles. I had driven it to the autozone to get the codes read in restricted mode (under 3000 rpm) and if not for the light you wouldn't know there was an issue. Thanks

Per JTIS - 1642 is CAN circuit malfunction
When fault is detected, ECM:
– Limits throttle to approximately
30%
– Inhibits cruise control

And the plot thickens. The weather got nice enough for me to get it out a bit. After about a minute or two the check engine light stays on but the restricted performance goes away and I can drive it normally. When I park or stop at a stop sign the restricted performance pops up again but then disappears after I get moving.

Hi Paul-
For this problem you really should go ahead and buy an inexpensive code reader. You are going to have to monitor the codes and reset them several times.
First thing you should do is resolve the misfires. Remove the coil cover (panel with six small bolts on top of the valve cover) on the driver side.
Remove coils 6 and 7 and check if the spark plug wells are filled with oil or water. If there is oil, your valve cover is leaking. If there is water, the coil cover seals are leaking and water ingress could have been caused by an engine pressure wash.
If no problems are apparent, re-install coil 7 and swap coils 5 and 6. If the code changes from P0306 to P0305 you have a bad coil. Afterwards and likewise swap 7 and 8 and see if the code changes from P0307 to 0308.
Resolve these misfires, then see which, if any codes still remain.

If you just cleared them, check that they do not come back after a bit of driving.
Possible causes:
- Engine misfire
- Air intake leak between MAFS and throttle
- Fuel filter, system blockage
- Fuel injector blockage
- Fuel pressure regulator failure (low fuel pressure)
- Low fuel pump output
- HO2S harness wiring condition fault
- Exhaust leak (before catalyst)
- ECM receiving incorrect signal from one or more of the following components: ECTS, MAFS, IATS, TPS
If the misfire is really fixed, then an air leak in the intake is most likely. Take a close look at the hose that connects to the Bank 1 (right side from driver's perspective) side of the engine.
