Default Should there be an alarm confirmation beep?

Hello all,

I'm new to Jaguar and the XK8. My alarm seems to work fine, except that I don't get an audible confirmation when I use the remote to arm or disarm. My XK8 is a '97, and I could swear that the '99 I looked at before buying mine had a beep to confirm arming. Perhaps my year didn't come with this feature, or it is disabled somehow?

I apologize if this had been discussed in the past (I searched & couldn't find anything about it).

Many thanks in advance.

On mine, and I think on the rest of them, there is a very quiet beep that you have to be standing pretty close to the car to hear. Oh, and it only makes the sound once. If you press it again, it is silent.

The alarm chirp is programmable only through the WDS dealer or indy diagnostic system. It can be turned on or off to suit.

If you have to have any codes read in the future, that would be the time to have it checked.

Thank you!

That brings up another question - if you use the key to lock the door, would it still beep? I might want the option to lock the car but avoid the beep in some circumstances.

This is from the US market Security Handbook for your Model Year:

Should there be an alarm confirmation beep?-security.jpg

(click on the image to enlarge it)

The normal setup is for the alarm to beep once when Locking and Arming, twice when Unlocking and Disarming.

The Security System configuration varies for different markets. Some do not allow beeps. The sound can be disabled by the dealer on UK market vehicles and it's possible the same can be done in the US.

I don't know how many times I have walked back to the car to see if mine is locked. The squeak is barely audible. But then again my hearing hasn't been the same since the AC/DC concert in '79. At least the lights flash. I wouldn't worry about the sound if you have it turned on, it wouldn't bother a trappist monk.

A beep is one thing, but honking the horn every time I lock the doors is one more reason I refuse to buy something new-ish and American. Hope they don't do that on Vipers and Corvettes... ugh!

FWIW, my 97 doesn't have audible feedback either. You have to watch the lights to make sure it locks.

You can have it switched on if you wanted to.
