A bad check valve in the in-tank Fuel Pump Assembly will result in long cranking times.

Plugs could be an issue too, I know I had a problem with mine where it would and wouldn't start and the issue was the plugs. When was the last time you did your plugs?

my 98 xk8 with a new tune up 1500$ prior owner, set for a month and i started it , no problems and five days later a check engine light came on and it cranks well but does not start. guess I will have to buy a scanner or a program for my lap top to get a code. The batteroy had dropped to 11.4 volts but I charged it to 13.4 volts and the battery is strong is there a procedure to make the check engine light to reset for a low battery issue?

Either by scanner or disconnecting the battery are the only two I know. Scanner method recommended because there can be issues with disconnecting the battery. If you have an autozone nearby they can pull the codes for you for free so you at least know what they are.

So disconnecting the battery resets the MIL.

Never thought about doing it that way because I have AutoEnginuity. There were times I wish I'd known that before I had it available.

Yes it does, I've done it a few times as I don't have a scanner or AE. But you have to reset the window limits (not hard), stereo presets, and I think thats it on the convertible. But unless the issue is corrected, it'll just show up again.

That's one to remember as a 'get you home' if the car gets stuck in the middle of nowhere with the instrument pack lit up like a Christmas tree.

It's also window limits, stereo presets (and radio code in the UK only) on the coupe if the battery is disconnected.

Thanks,
Graham

Cool xk8 starting problems/ fuel pump issue

I had it towed to a shop and they hot wired the fuel pump and said it was needing a 1300 fuel pump. I went and got it and took out the pump and spent a 130 on a new oem pump , waiting for the new one . I tested the old one by running it in fuel for hours without stopping. Are there relays in the circuit that may be an issue? Are the later models different? Help me count the ways

The fuel pump relay on your 99 is in the luggage compartment fusebox. It's a brown Relay R4.

As they are all brown in that box, that might not help too much to identify it! They are arranged like a letter 'T':

R1 R2 R3
.... R4
.... R5
.... R6
.... R7

If you suspect the R4 fuel pump relay may be faulty, check the stoplamps work and then switch positions R4 with R5 which controls the stoplamps. If the stoplamps still work OK, you know the relay R4 is good.
