That is no excuse for gross incompetence and price gouging by the dealership....

^^ I agree.
If a dealership has accepted the work, it is not unreasonable to expect an appropriate level of competence in its execution.

I don't see the original vehicle cost as relevant in any way.

To wit, "dealership competence" is an automotive oxymoron.

Unfortunately when you take your car into a Jaguar dealership, they don't price their parts and labour based on the current value of the car, they charge full price as if it was a new car that cost $100,000. The cars cost a lot of money when new, and the new parts (if you can get them) are still priced at that brand new price. Add to that that the dealers no longer have any experience of fault finding on 20 year old cars and you end up with situations like this - which is why everyone is advised to stay away from the dealers and why many of them simply won't work on older models because it isn't worth the hassle. Cars they don't know how to fix and unhappy customers as a result.

I understand that they may not know everything, but my big complaint is that I brought them error codes and even their own Jaguar Process for the repair I-186, and they refused to take it or even acknowledge that it was a possible help, they just brushed me off as an uninformed idiot.

That's truly inexcusable, but all too common.
