Default Steering Column Replacement ?? Reach problem

First of all this is a great forum. I don't post very often because I know very little about my 2001 XK8, but I am learning. My reach/telescoping function has quit working. I can hear the motor but no movement. However I can pull it towards be and let it go back on it's own. My understanding from searching the forum is, that since I can move the steering wheel in and out then the reach cable is not the problem. I must replace the steering column. If this is what must be done, is there a good right up on how to do it? Also where to get a replacement that won't bankrupt me. I am a do-it-yourself guy, so I could use some guidance. Thanks

Sounds like the gear teeth are 'stripped'.

I would find a good-used column from a local salvage yard.

Thanks for the link Motorcarman. The prices don't look so bad. Now the question is how to get it out and replace it. I do have the PDF shop manuals but was wondering if any one had done it with a write up and pictures.
