Default Steering Rack inner joints

Hi all,

I'm after some steering rack advice as it is not something I have worked previously. I have been advised on my last MOT that there is play in the steering rack inner joints and the steering is noticeable vague recently. I have had a quick look to see if the tie rods/inner joints are available to buy separately but I can only seem to find complete steering racks. Has anyone else successfully changed these? or does the whole rack need changing??

Thanks,

Inner and outer tie rods are available for sure. It's a pretty easy job to replace. Rev Sam has a utube video on it if it helps.

I replaced both of my inner tie rods and tie rod ends recently - pretty easy job - I purchased them from Rock Auto

Inner Tie Rods are one of the easier suspension jobs on an X-100. You can use an adjustable wrench to remove them from the rack.

I did one side at a time, and drove it down my street to set the toe on each side, so I didn't even need to re-align it.

Thanks all, I have found a few suppliers now - they do not seem to be a stocked by any of the usual jag parts suppliers I use. e.g. they are not listed on the parts illustrations as posted above.

Ungn, how did you set the toe yourself? change one side and test drive and adjust that side back to a straight line, then repeat on the other side??

I pulled the outer tie rod out of the upright and unscrewed the inner, leaving the two attached. I used a piece of cardboard with holes to make a template, then I assembled the the new parts to a similar length.

Once one side was installed, I drove down my street (flat and over 1/4 mile long) and adjusted the new tie rods until the steering wheel was perfect, then repeated on the other side. After that, I drove the car 10K miles on old tires with no noticeable wear..

Nice and simple - just how I like it. Shame there are no flat straight roads where I live!
