Default Storage costs ..... your thoughts

For the last 15 years I have been lucky enough to have the use of a rather rough but functional industrial workshop. Due to one thing and another it has been rent free. Now things have changed and from July I need to pay £150 a month. I’m not interested in legal aspects as they’ve been very fair to me and I have no complaints. The unit comfortably fits 2 vehicles and my xkr and xjs have just spent the winter tucked up. I have electric heating on non stop 24 7 as I please as well as lighting sockets welding gear battery chargers etc. The roof leaks a bit but it’s not a problem. It is pretty secure and I’ve never had any problems and there’s cctv and 24 hour on site security. There is 24 hour access. I don’t have a garage where I live but do have ample parking. Ultimately I intend to buy a house with a garage and be independent. I hear of others who pay double the amount I do to indulge their motoring hobby and wondered what the forum thinks?

It's difficult to quantify, since it really depends on what the going rate is in your area. I had to store the XK and the MGB around 14 years ago while we transitioned to our new (old) house and IIRC I paid around £200 pm for each - but storage space in Jersey is at a premium.

If they're safe, and you have the facilities you mentioned, then it doesn't sound a bad deal to me. I presently pay £110 pm just for a dedicated parking space in town for my wife's X5.

Curious - what part of Yorkshire are you in?

Seems very reasonable to me.

I'm with RJ - doesn't sound all that bad for everything you've listed. I wouldn't know for certain as house has 2 car garage actually able to house both jags

A reasonable charge for what you get.

I have a garage, but my dad currently has 4 cars (two Saab 9-3 Aero convertibles, a Cadillac sedan, and an S-Type R) and pays $500 per month per car for garage spaces by his apartment in Manhattan. I remember when I drove up and kept my car there there was a surcharge as they considered my car "exotic." At least they parked it next to a frost blue '8 convertible which I had tried to buy. I actually saw that car in the garage and bought my own within a week after the owner refused to sell it to me. Anyway, I'd gladly take that price. I currently have no room for my Range Rover and will most likely have to buy a storage unit nearby.

I'll bet you would. You could probably buy several square miles of land in parts of Yorkshire, UK (where the OP is based) for the same cost as a square foot in Manhatten.

But if there is Planning Permission on it, the price is going to leap up!
Sadly, all the old workshops and light industrial units around here are getting harder to find, especially at sensible prices. People just look at them and imagine how many houses they could cram onto the land once the existing buildings have been razed.
If I could find a secure place like the OP has, for 150 per month, I'd be in like a flash. You would pay 100 quid for a 22' shipping container, no power and scant security round here, and I'm too fat to be climbing out of car windows inside one of them
