Default Strut mount removal

Hello all, I'm in the process of replacing my strut mounts. Only one issue... I can't get the nut for the mount itself off, when I go to loosen it, the damper rod spins... Any suggestions on this?

Thanks!

If you don't have an impact tool to whip it off fast you will have to hold the top of the rod using the square end as you wrench it loose.

Usually they are not that tight. Make sure the threads are clean as possible and a drop or two of lube would not hurt.

Best pic I had of the square top.

Unfortunately, the adaptive suspension doesn't have such a spot, I did figure it out however, i just didn't have enough tension taken out of the road spring.finally got the drivers side done. Full write up to come!

The adaptive dampers use Allen key in top of shaft.

It appears that the passenger side Allen key is stripped

Bcrary3, Just checking, did you understand the comment about impact wrench? Before I owned one I sure wouldn't. It will use momentum to tighten or loosen a nut on a movable bolt like these. It hammers/rotates in the direction chosen so fast the bolt has no time to spin.

If none available: Even a small Stillson wrench will probably be too thick to maintain nut access. How about a vice grip pliers on the shaft's top, open end wrench to tighten bolt (it is a low torque tightness - around 17 ft lbs as I recall but look it up).

The top of the damper shaft is not exposed on the active damper so holding the top is not an option if Allen socket has been stripped.
only other option l see is to dislodge bump stop below and hold shaft with vice grips inserted between upper coils. That would be above damper travel so no harm done in marking shaft.

Baxtor, cut a slot in the top with a small metal cutting disc on a Dremmel tool. Then use a screwdriver to hold it.
But the vise grips should work, .

We may well be addressing an issue the OP does not have but if he does, the setup on the active damper retaining nut does not allow any access to the shaft other than the internal hex socket. The nut can best be described as a dome nut with a smaller than thread bore hole in the top for plug access.
