Stuck in valet mode [SOLVED]
Just wanted to post my story in hopes it helps someone else!
So my 1997 XK8 convertible decided one day to go into valet mode. I don't have a remote fob, only have the black key, but unlocking and starting the car offered no change. I disconnected the valet button, no change. I tried spraying some WD-40 into the "XK8" rear keyhole and turning the key and while it would move about 45 degrees, it didn't want to go more and I feared it was somehow disabled and I didn't want to break the key off trying harder.
After giving it a few days I decided to try the key in the trunk again, to no avail. But then I slid the key back and forth and gave it a wiggle and a tilt and voila! It finally engaged and turned as it should.
I realize this isn't the most groundbreaking solution, but it worked for me. That lock is pretty tight but can still do with some finagling to get it to turn.

I advise all my customers to open the door and boot lid latches with the key every few months to avoid the problem of stuck key locks.
I really have no sympathy for people that rely on electric solenoids and dismiss mechanical locks. (use-it-or-lose-it)
Glad it worked out for you!!!!!

Locksmiths Graphite is a more long lasting solution to stiff or sticking locks.

Sometimes known as 'dry lubricant', it is an extremely fine powder usually supplied in a squeeze bottle with a nozzle so it can be blown directly through the keyway.
