Default Test unit

I have a 2001 xkr convertible. I have read many threads before I asked this. My question: What is a test unit that will read all the codes of my OBDII. Can someone recommend something current? Where to get one? Multiple options? My craftsman will read it, but not translate all codes.

I'd beware of any reader's interpretation of DTCs other than Jaguar's proprietary diagnostic tools. If you have the codes, then refer to Jaguar's DTC lists:- I've attached the MY2001 P-code documentation.

What I wanted to know is, what specific unit to use, (which I suppose you answered in a way, without giving its name) and where to get one. Thanks for the pdf file. I am sure it will be extremely helpful.

The only one I've seen (and I don't own one) is the "Mongoose" cable and the JLR diagnostic software. Here's a link to one company in the UK who sells it. There may be others.

https://www.jlridssddmongoose.com/

I have access to several good scan tools and none of them work for everything on these cars. A very old Autel MaxiDAS will read every module, but can't reset some codes, like ABS. A newer SnapOn will do most, but hangs up and crashes when reading the trans controller. A newer Autel won't go back to 2000. A new DrivePro will clear all codes but can't read the trans controller. It's all very frustrating. The electronics, while somewhat sophisticated are still very primitive, even compared to contemporaneous low-end BMWs.

I've been lucky and have been able to cripple by with these. If you can only get one, I'd suggest springing for the JLR Diagnostic kit.

Any other suggestions? Did Jag abandon the technology or something?

Pretty much. These cars had a very limited production, and are now 20+ years old. There's no money in it for Jag so they couldn't care less. They'd prefer you bought a new one, and I doubt they'd shed many tears if they all went to the crusher.

Mithrilweaver the Coventry Foundation placed a working WDS unit (loaded with IDS) in selective and strategic points in the US. In Texas the WDS is under the protection of the Jaguar Owners Association of North Texas. You can find their contacts on the JCNA web site. Warning--this unit is not portable so you must go to it. You also need some experience with it to use it. That said folks come down from Oklahoma and up from Houston to fix issues. Best wshes.

Coventry Foundation,

Do you maintain any working WDS / IDS systems here in North Carolina? It would be good information to have in the event that I need to access one....

The Launch X431 pros mini and probably other variations will read all codes and real time data for over 100 different makes. I have used it on both my Jag and Maserati.

Hi,

I looked at your site (very nice, BTW) but didn't see the information I was after. Do you have anything in the Los Angeles area?

We have a unit in Oceanside. It is under the control of volunteers from the San Diego club. And thanks for the compliment.

I can read and print all the DTCs in all your modules with WDS or IDS (I have BOTH) but you are about 150miles away.

If you plan a road trip East, let me know.
