Default Timing chain tensioners

I own a 2002 xk8. Is there any way of verifying wether the tensioners for the drive chain are the plastic or metal ones without taking the engine apart? Manufacturing date was May 2002.

There is only one sure fire way. Take off the passenger side cam cover (easiest) and look. If it isn't metal body pull the other cover and change them. Any other way is a crap shoot. Is my engine number high enough I don't have some left over in stock part installed?

Check the ENGINE NUMBER/DATE CODE (left side of block behind the engine mount)
