Default Tire Selection

It may have been asked already but I cant find it. I just found that to replace my tires, Perelli 255/45/ZR18 99Y, it will cost $350.00 US to replace each one. With a listed tread wear of 140. Any recommendations for an alternative? I don't want to give up the corner grabbing ability that it has now but I just have a hard time justifying $1400.00 for a set of tires.
Thanks

I have had good luck with Yokohama YK580's. Good grip and quiet. Reasonable pricing and occasionally Discount Tires runs them on sale.

I have had a very good experience with Nexen 3000's. They are priced well below $150.00/tire with balancing.

I just posted a couple of weeks ago about General Tires. I never liked the pirrelli tires, after they start to wear, they tended to follow ruts in the road. New Generals are smooth and quiet.

Default Tires

I'm running Nexen 3000s on my XKR and Michelin Pilot Sports on the front of my F-Type (it plowed through those expensive Pirelli tires in 12K miles). Happy with both.

Thanks

Many of the low profile, high performance tires give low tread life. My XJR (255/45x17) went thru four sets (no...wait...I think it was five sets) of tires in the first 70k miles.

I ended up re-sizing wheels/tires just to get some tires with a decent tread life.....but that might not be a viable option in your case.

Anyhow, just commiserating with you :-)

Cheers
DD

Another vote for the Yokohama YK580 from Discount Tire. Installed them on my wife's XK8 nearly 26,000 miles ago and they are still going strong. Did months of tire research before deciding on them - they may be the best bang-for-the-buck tire on the market right now....

good to see a mention of them...although a different vehicle, I just ordered a set for the X-Type. Had contemplated the Ventus RS-3 and decided to wait on them for a while...

However, the XK8 is going to be due for new shoes within the next six months or so. My daily use of it over the past three months or so took a toll not to mention that the Goodyears dad was running appear to be nearing seven years in age (still under 90K miles on the car).

You guys are awesome, I love this forum. I'm always very careful about buying tires but all of the research in the world does nothing for actual experience. I appreciate all of the replies.

mbe, the hancooks were mounted on my XK8 and I still have that car. I haven't had to buy new tires for my XJ yet.

Love my Hancook Evo12's. They're smooth and quiet and great in the rain. The price was right... around $235 per tire, mounted and balanced.

I liked my Riken Rapters, but for not much more, I love the Hankook Ventus V12 Evos I'm running now. The hype is legitimate folks, superb tire for these cars.

Just installed Michlin Pilot Super Sports for my XKR. They get great reviews and are reasonably priced. (sort of at 1350 for the set of 4) Used the stock front size but upped the rears to a 285 35/20 instead of the 285 30/20 to get a little bit taller side wall. Didnt like the look of a bit taller tire in the front. The Michlins run wide for there size. Hope this helps bit..
