Default Tires

Spring is taunting us here in south-central Canuckistan, and I have to get serious about new shoes for Mr. J. (Junior) once the snowdrift in front of the garage is completely gone. The P-Zeros are beginning to look a bit, well, tired! Plus, they never really impressed me in the first place.Trouble is, there doesn't seem to be much else in an exact match for 245/50 17" tires. I put about 5,000 miles a year on max, never in winter, and not intentionally in much rain. I'm interested in ride quality, dry traction, noise, and wear in that order. I'm an 8, not an R and I tour, not tear-***, around. Any suggestions?

You will probably be able to think about those new tires awhile longer there in "Canuckistan". We're getting 3-5 inches of "spring" here in Michigan and its heading your way. Sorry

About seven months ago I had a set of Bridgestone Potenza Poll Position tires mounted on my 2005 XKR coupe, 18" Hydra wheels and they have been excellent. The tires are very, very quiet, provide ample pavement feel and stay glued to the road in tight turns. Dry and wet traction have been superior. Prior to the Potenzas' I had Yokohama Advan S4s. They were also good but not nearly as quiet as the Potenzas' and not as much pavement feel. You really can't go wrong with either tire.

The last Bridgestone 18" tires I had were 140-A-A highway tread. If you go the Bridgestone route, please consider a tire with longer wear characteristics. I replaced them @ 23K miles with all season tires Goodyear GT's for the wet weather performance--and they handle and ride much better than the Bridgestones. I think I paid $125/$145 @ Treaddepot.com--a forum sponsor.

This thread should be merged with the Tire Opinions thread. I've been watching it as I'll be getting new tires in a month or three and would like to see everyone's opinions in one nice tidy post.

Thanks again, everybody. It would seem that I would have a lot more choice if I had 18" rims, but I really like the look of the 17" Silver Laminas on the car and would go back to Pirrelli if I have to, or go to 45s. Lowering the car a bit wouldn't be all bad. Will keep you informed.

Fuzion Hri and Zri (I think it was hri and zir, but definitely fuzio) tires are relatively inexpensive, provide a much better ride than the pirelli's and fit 17 inch rims. Me, my brother and my father all had them on our XK8s and seem to fit your requirements.

I have a set of Hankook V12 eVo tires if you're interested. They're just like new.

Thanks XK8, but shipping them east AND across the border wouldn't work.
